Anxiety Counselling

Anxiety Counselling in Brighton & Hove

Help from a therapist who understands it first-hand. I know what it's like to live with anxiety, the constant tension, the self‑doubt, the urge to escape difficult feelings, and the toll it takes on relationships, work and self‑esteem.

Stillness and calm

Following my own recovery and professional learning, I now help others move from feeling trapped by anxiety to living confident, emotionally balanced lives.

I take a solution‑focused, practical approach that works on the problems actually affecting your day‑to‑day functioning. Together we'll cover simple, deliberate exercises that help calm your nervous system and respond differently when anxiety shows up.

This isn't about fixing what's "wrong" with you. Our goal is simply to help you reconnect with the person you already are, underneath the fear.

However it shows up

Support for the different ways anxiety manifests

For some it's a constant background hum of worry; for others it takes over the body and thoughts without warning. However it shows up, we'll look at what triggers it, how it keeps you stuck, and what you can do when it takes hold.

Anxiety & panic attacks

Support for racing thoughts, panic episodes, intense worry, chest tightness, breathlessness, and the fear of losing control.

Social & performance anxiety

Help with confidence, self‑consciousness, people‑pleasing, fear of judgement, and avoidance of social situations.

Chronic worry & overthinking

Support for mental overload, catastrophising, decision paralysis, and the feeling that your mind never gets a break.

A sense of steadiness

Your thoughts don't have to run your life

Build awareness and emotional strength

Anxiety is often driven by old habits of thinking and reacting that once kept you safe, but now hold you back. I'll help you notice those patterns and learn to respond differently when anxiety shows up.

Instead of forcing yourself to "be positive," we focus on building awareness and strength. You'll learn to sit with difficult feelings without being overwhelmed, create distance from unhelpful thoughts, and make decisions based on what you want, not what anxiety tells you to avoid.

You can't change the past, but you can change how you relate to it.

What to expect

What to expect from anxiety counselling

Anxiety is your mind and body trying to protect you, just working overtime. It might show up as a racing heart and shallow breath, a mind that catastrophises and won't switch off, broken sleep, or the quiet exhaustion of always scanning for what might go wrong. Sometimes it narrows life gradually, as you begin to avoid the situations that set it off. Recognising the pattern is the first, most hopeful step, because a pattern that was learned can be gently unlearned.

My approach is practical and solution-focused. Rather than analysing every worry, we work on what is affecting your day-to-day life now. Drawing on Human Givens ideas, we make sure your core emotional needs, for safety, connection, control and meaning, are being met in healthy ways, since unmet needs are often what keep the alarm ringing. You'll learn simple, repeatable tools to calm an overactive nervous system, alongside ways to step back from anxious thoughts rather than being swept along by them.

Sessions last an hour and are completely confidential. Between sessions you might practise a breathing or grounding exercise, or notice a particular trigger, small experiments that build real change over time. If panic attacks, health anxiety or old trauma are part of the picture, we work with those gently too, and if low mood often travels alongside the worry, we hold both together.

Anxiety counselling suits anyone who feels controlled by fear and wants their life back, whether the trigger is work, health, relationships or seemingly nothing at all. I work in person from Hove, including Brighton, Hove and Worthing, and by secure video across the UK. See all the areas I cover, or explore online counselling.
