Life in Lewes

What is going on for people in Lewes?

Lewes is a town that knows itself well, with long-standing traditions and a strong sense of who belongs. That is warming most of the time and awkward when you are struggling, because being known means being seen. Social anxiety here has a particular flavour: the walk up School Hill where you will meet three people you know, the queue on Cliffe High Street, the conversation you replay for two days afterwards. Others describe worry that attaches to work, money or health and simply will not switch off. The steep streets and the castle above them make a handsome setting for a mind that is somewhere else entirely, running through tomorrow before today has finished.

What does anxiety counselling involve?

Anxiety counselling here is practical and solution-focused: we work on the worry, panic, social anxiety and over-thinking that are actually affecting your day, and on simple ways to settle a nervous system stuck on high alert.

The method travels; only the geography changes. the full anxiety counselling page explains it properly, the practical side answers the practical questions, and my BACP registration shows how the practice is held to account.

What happens in a session?

Sessions take place in a private, comfortable room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove, held to the strict BACP confidentiality you would expect. We begin with a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, and the same sessions are available by secure video if travelling is difficult or you would simply prefer it.

Getting to the room in Hove takes around twenty minutes by car on the A27, or a short direct train to Brighton and on from there. Secure video sessions are available for the same work if you would rather not travel. Where anxiety involves driving, trains or crowded places, having both options genuinely helps, because you can begin at home and build up to the journey as part of the work itself.

Anxiety Counselling in Lewes

Why people in Lewes come for anxiety counselling

Anxiety counselling is at its most useful when it stays concrete. We work out how your particular version operates, including what the body does and which small habits of checking or avoiding are keeping it fuelled. Then we move to skills: reliable ways of bringing the arousal down, practised regularly rather than only in an emergency. After that comes a planned return to whatever has been shrinking, at a pace you set, so ground is taken back rather than endured. In East Sussex 24.1% of adults reported a high anxiety score in 2022/23, above the England average of 23.8%. The free NHS route is Health in Mind, the East Sussex NHS Talking Therapies service, which takes self-referrals, and the Sussex Mental Healthline is answered around the clock if things sharpen.

Lewes questions

Anxiety Counselling in Lewes: common questions

Where do Lewes sessions take place, and can I meet online instead?

In a private room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove. From Lewes the office is around twenty minutes by car on the A27, or a short direct train to Brighton and on to Hove. Every service is also available by secure video across the UK, so you can meet from any private space in Lewes or blend the two.

How quickly could I have a first session?

A free 15-minute call is usually possible within a few days, and regular sessions tend to begin within a week or two. Nothing requires a referral. If you would rather start online and travel to Hove later, that is a perfectly normal way to do it.

What does one session actually cost?

The hourly rate is £80, with £100 for a ninety-minute appointment and £120 for two hours. Anxiety work usually runs as weekly hours, at least to begin with. The first 15-minute conversation costs nothing and you are under no obligation to book anything after it.

What is the NHS route from Lewes?

Health in Mind is the East Sussex NHS Talking Therapies service and takes self-referrals directly, without a GP appointment. It is free and it is busy: 24.1% of adults in East Sussex reported a high anxiety score in 2022/23, against 23.8% nationally. Many people also start privately.

Can I keep sessions online through the winter and come in person later?

Yes, and people do exactly that when the A27 in the dark is unappealing. The work is the same either way. We would agree in advance which format each week will use, so nobody is sitting waiting in the wrong place.

I keep running into people I know. Does that make anxiety harder to shift?

It can, because avoidance becomes very visible in a town this size and each sidestep teaches the brain that the situation was dangerous. We work on what happens in your body before those encounters, then on rejoining them gradually rather than bracing for each one.

How quickly can I reach anxiety counselling from Lewes?

Fast, frequent trains run from Lewes to Brighton in around fifteen minutes, then a couple of stops to Hove and a short walk to my room; by car the A27 takes about twenty. Online video sessions are there for weeks when travelling over the Downs is inconvenient.

How do I book anxiety counselling and reach Hove from Lewes?

Book a free fifteen-minute call, then a session. Lewes has fast, frequent trains to Brighton in around fifteen minutes, where you continue a couple of stops to Hove, or the A27 takes about twenty minutes. If anxiety makes travelling hard, we can meet online instead.

What do anxiety sessions cost, and is NHS help available from Lewes?

Private sessions are £80 for sixty minutes, £100 for ninety and £120 for two hours, after a free consultation. You can self-refer to free NHS Talking Therapies for East Sussex without a GP, but waits are common, so private work on your anxiety can start sooner.

For anxiety in Lewes, in person or online, and do you run evenings?

Both suit anxiety. In a town where faces are quickly known, some value the discreet room over the Downs, while others, especially with social anxiety, prefer video from home. You can mix the two, and evening and weekend slots fit around a busy week.
