Life in London

Why do people in London reach out?

Two people can share a flat in London and barely overlap. One is out towards the City financial district before seven; the other comes in from a late shift when the first is already asleep. Add a crowded commute from Croydon or Walthamstow, and a rent that makes separating during a bad patch feel financially impossible, and a partnership can go months without proper attention. Couples here seldom arrive because of one enormous row. They arrive because the conversations got shorter, the affection thinned out, and neither of you can say quite when that started. Distance is a strange thing to feel in a city this size, and it is among the most common reasons anyone gets in touch from a London postcode.

What does relationship counselling involve?

Relationship counselling here, for couples or individuals, slows down the pattern you are caught in and builds healthier ways of hearing and being heard.

Because the work itself is the same wherever you live, the detail sits in one place rather than all of them: everything on relationship counselling sets out the methods, how I work covers the practicalities, and my credentials and registration covers accountability.

How does meeting by video work in practice?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Everything runs online by secure video, because Bradley works from one room in Hove and there is nowhere in your borough to travel to. In practice that removes the hardest part of couples work in this city, which is the logistics. Nobody has to cross town after work. You can sit together at a kitchen table once the flat is quiet, or join from two separate screens if one of you is stuck late.

Relationship Counselling in London

Why people in London come for relationship counselling

Most of what gets described as a communication problem turns out to be a repair problem. The argument itself is rarely the damage; the three days of politeness afterwards usually are. Mental-health provision in London is commissioned separately by each of the 32 boroughs, so people who have moved twice within the capital often have no settled place to take any of this. The work begins with the pattern rather than the last row: who withdraws, who pursues, and what each of you is protecting by doing it. Where drinking or a long stretch of low mood has sat in the middle of things, we look at what the two of you have quietly organised around it. You do not have to attend as a couple. Many people start alone and stay alone. Your local borough's NHS Talking Therapies service takes self-referrals, and Good Thinking, London's free NHS digital mental wellbeing service, costs nothing to try.

Finding support in London

My online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In London, you can refer yourself directly to your local borough's NHS Talking Therapies service for free NHS talking therapy, with no GP referral needed.

Private sessions with me usually mean you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout; I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

If you need urgent help now

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.

London questions

Online Relationship Counselling in London: common questions

How soon could we start, and is there a waiting list?

There is no waiting list in the NHS sense. A free 15-minute consultation is usually available within a few days of you getting in touch, and a first full session tends to follow that same week or the next. Evening slots go first in London, so say early if an evening is what you need.

Does it cost more if both of us attend?

No. The fee is the same whether one of you comes or both. Sessions are £80 / 60 min, £100 / 90 min and £120 / 120 min. Couples often choose the 90-minute slot, because an hour goes quickly when two people each need room to speak. That opening 15-minute consultation carries no charge.

Is there anything free for couples through the NHS in our borough?

Your local borough's NHS Talking Therapies service accepts self-referrals without going through a GP, and some boroughs commission couple therapy for depression within it. Because the 32 boroughs commission separately, what exists in Camden may not exist in Croydon. Thrive LDN also maps citywide options.

Can we join from two different places if one of us travels for work?

Yes, and plenty of London couples do. One of you can be at home in Wandsworth while the other joins from a hotel or a booked meeting booth, and the hour still works. If a connection drops we continue by phone rather than lose the session altogether. Nothing needs both of you in the same postcode.

We are in a flat share - how do we talk about our relationship without being overheard?

This comes up constantly here, where couples are often still sharing well into their thirties. Headphones change more than anything else. Some people book for hours when housemates are at work; others sit in a parked car. A session in Islington or Shoreditch does not have to be silent, only private.

Can my partner and I join from different places if one of us is still at work?

Yes. Online sessions make it possible for one of you to join from home and the other from a quiet room at the office, which suits couples whose London working days rarely finish at the same time. We simply agree a slot you can both reliably keep.

How soon could we start relationship counselling online in London?

Usually within a week or so. There is no waiting list, and after a free 15-minute consultation we book your first session at a time that survives the capital's pace. Sessions run securely online across every borough, from Hackney to the outer suburbs, so nothing has to be crossed to begin.

What are your fees, and how does this compare with NHS couples support in London?

Sessions are £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 minutes and £120 for 120 minutes, after a free 15-minute consultation. NHS Talking Therapies across the London boroughs is free but often involves a waiting list, whereas working privately with Bradley lets you choose the timing yourselves.

Can my partner and I join from different places, and are evenings possible?

Yes. One of you can join from home and the other from a quiet room near the City or Canary Wharf, which suits couples whose London days rarely end together. Early-evening slots are available once the commute is done, and we hold a regular time you can both protect.
