In and around Sheffield
Life in Sheffield
Sheffield is a green city on the edge of the Peak, proud of its steel heritage and shaped by its loss. A large student population, an economy rebuilt after heavy industry, and real contrasts between leafy and hard-pressed neighbourhoods all shape the pressures people carry.
Sheffield spreads across seven hills between the rivers Don and Sheaf, England's greenest large city and the only one with a national park inside its boundary, the Peak District rises straight from its western suburbs. The steel and cutlery that made its name have given way to the two universities and the advanced manufacturing works out towards Rotherham, while the old works around Kelham Island now house bars and studios. The Supertram loops through the centre past the Crucible and the Winter Garden, and leafy Ecclesall and Nether Edge climb towards Crookes and Walkley. Meadowhall sits to the east by the M1, but the pull for many is west, up onto the moors and the gritstone edges.
Where the old industries have gone and there is a strong culture of just getting on with things, online keeps support discreet and within reach however stretched the week.
Sheffield hosts the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (the Northern General and Royal Hallamshire hospitals); its steel heritage survives in firms such as Sheffield Forgemasters.

Anxiety counselling here is practical and solution-focused: we work on the worry, panic, social anxiety and over-thinking that are actually affecting your day, and on simple ways to settle a nervous system stuck on high alert.
The approach is the same wherever you live, so rather than repeat it on every page you can read it in full, the methods, what each session covers and fees, on the main anxiety counselling page and on how I work.
Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link held to the same strict BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, you join each session from any private space using a phone, tablet or laptop, no software to install, no waiting room and no journey at either end.
I work from a base in Hove and see people in Sheffield online, by secure video call, rather than in person. That means the hills and the tram never come into it, you can meet from home or a quiet room, and we keep a steady weekly time that fits around work, study or family without a journey across the city. Sessions come to you wherever you can talk privately.

Anxiety Counselling in Sheffield
Sheffield wears its calm well, the Peak rising from the western suburbs, green everywhere, but that doesn't stop anxiety taking hold underneath it. Student pressure, insecure work in an economy rebuilt after steel, money worries: any of these can leave you tense, restless and braced for the next thing. I'm Bradley Riddell, a counsellor based in Hove, and I see people across Sheffield by secure video rather than in person. We work out what feeds the worry and build grounded ways to quiet it, meeting at a regular weekly time you can join from Crookes, Nether Edge or wherever you can speak privately.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.

Sheffield questions
Yes. I work with people right across Sheffield, from the centre and Kelham Island outwards, and anywhere else in Yorkshire & North East, by secure video, no need to travel to Hove, and just as confidential as meeting in the room.
Yes. We work on what happens in your body when anxiety spikes and rehearse practical ways to settle it, which translates well to video sessions you do from a place you already feel safe.
That is common and completely workable. We can start with the camera off, keep early sessions short and build up at your pace; many anxious clients find home the easiest place to begin.
It varies, but solution-focused work often makes a difference within a handful of sessions. We review together rather than committing you to an open-ended course.
Yes. Because we meet online, sessions carry on through term, exams and trips home wherever you are. I work privately, separate from the universities' own wellbeing services, so you can use both if you wish, without anything interrupting the continuity of our work.
Usually within a week. We start with a free 15-minute consultation, then a first full session by secure video. I'm based in Hove and work online across Sheffield, so the hills and the tram never come into it, and there's no waiting list before we begin.
Sessions are £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for two hours, after a free 15-minute consultation. NHS talking therapies in Sheffield are free but can involve a wait; privately and online, you can usually start sooner and keep one regular time.
Yes. I don't have a room in Sheffield; I work from Hove by secure video, so there's no trip in from Crookes or Nether Edge. We can often hold an evening or early slot, which suits anxiety that flares around work or study.
No, I'm on the south coast in Hove and work with Sheffield clients over secure video. Plenty of people prefer that: there's no trip into the centre or out to the university, and you can talk from wherever feels private, whether that's home in Crookes or Nether Edge or a quiet corner elsewhere.
Yes. Working online means term times, placements and trips home don't interrupt things, we can carry on by video wherever you are. It's worth knowing I'm a private counsellor, separate from the university's own wellbeing services, which you're also free to draw on.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
