Life in Sheffield

What is going on for people in Sheffield?

Emergency hospital admissions for self-harm in Sheffield ran at 129.3 per 100,000 in 2023/24, above the England average of 117 per 100,000, and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals sees the moments that reach that point. Most trauma never does. It sits with people in Kelham Island flats and in terraces in Walkley, showing itself as sleep that never restores, sudden anger, or a stubborn refusal to go near a particular street. It comes from all sorts of places: an assault, a crash, a difficult birth, a childhood that everyone agreed not to discuss. Time on its own does not settle it, though it does teach people to work around it.

What is trauma counselling, in practice?

Trauma counselling here is gentle and led by you, drawing on methods designed for trauma including the Human Givens Rewind Technique, so a difficult memory is returned to ordinary recall.

Because the work itself is the same wherever you live, the detail sits in one place rather than all of them: the trauma counselling page sets out the methods, how I work, sessions and fees covers the practicalities, and qualifications, registration and ethics covers accountability.

What happens in an online session?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Sessions are online by secure video, since I am based in Hove and there is nowhere in the city to come to. That suits this work. You stay in a place your body already treats as safe, you decide about the door, the light and the chair, and no journey has to be managed afterwards while you are still unsettled. Before we go anywhere difficult we agree how you tell me to slow down, and that signal needs no explanation when you use it.

Trauma Counselling in Sheffield

Why people in Sheffield come for trauma counselling

Almost nobody books saying they want trauma work. They book because something is wrong with sleep, or the temper, or the concentration, and because a small everyday thing produces a reaction that seems out of proportion. It is not out of proportion; it is a nervous system doing its job with old information. The pace is yours and the work is client-led throughout. Where it suits, the Human Givens Rewind Technique reduces the emotional charge in a memory without you needing to describe what happened, which surprises people who have avoided counselling precisely because they did not want to say it aloud. Early sessions go on sleep, grounding and understanding the reactions themselves. NHS Sheffield Talking Therapies takes self-referrals and will assess which NHS route fits, and Sheffield Mind is there for wider support.

Sheffield questions

Online Trauma Counselling in Sheffield: common questions

Will you push me to talk about the details?

No, and pushing would work against the aim anyway. The Rewind Technique is built to settle a memory without a spoken account, and the rest of the work concerns how things are now. What you share is yours to decide, week by week, with no pressure applied.

Something happened during a hospital stay and I cannot face appointments now. Can that be worked with?

Yes, and it is more common than people think. Medical settings can become powerful reminders, which then complicates ordinary health care. We would settle the reaction first and then rebuild your ability to attend, in steps you set rather than ones imposed on you.

What are your fees for this kind of work?

There is a free 15-minute consultation before anything is arranged. Sessions cost £80 / 60 min, and many people choose £100 / 90 min for trauma work so there is room to settle before finishing. A £120 / 120 min option exists if that fits you better.

Can I get NHS trauma support in Sheffield without a GP referral?

You can, and no GP appointment is needed to set it going. NHS Sheffield Talking Therapies takes self-referrals and will assess what suits, occasionally directing people to a different NHS team for particular kinds of trauma. Having that running while we work privately is straightforward and causes no conflict.

I feel stupid for still being affected by it. Is that normal?

It is nearly universal, and the shame usually does more damage than the memory by that stage. Nervous systems do not grade events by how serious they sound to other people. The reaction lasting is information about what happened, not about weakness.

What if talking about it makes things worse?

That's a common and reasonable fear. We go carefully, and you stay in control of the pace, nothing is forced. Much of trauma work is first building tools to feel steady, so that when we do approach memories, you're resourced rather than overwhelmed.

How soon can I start trauma counselling online in Sheffield?

We begin with a free 15-minute consultation, usually within a week, then a first video session. Trauma work is paced gently, never rushed. Working from Hove across Sheffield means no waiting list and no journey across the city when you're feeling raw.

How much is trauma counselling, and why not just use the NHS in Sheffield?

You can; Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and NHS talking therapies are free, though often with a wait. My fees are £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for two hours. Longer sessions can suit trauma, and privately you'd start sooner and choose the pace.

Is trauma work safe to do online instead of in person in Sheffield?

For many people, yes. Being in your own familiar space in Sheffield can feel steadier than an unfamiliar room. I work from Hove by secure video, and we can use 90-minute or evening sessions so there's time to settle in and close down gently.
