Life in Sheffield

What is going on for people in Sheffield?

Recorded depression on GP registers in Sheffield stood at 14.2% of adults in 2024/25, a shade below the England average of 14.3%, which puts the city almost exactly at the national level. Averages like that flatten out enormous local differences. The distance between Ecclesall and Gleadless is short on a map and considerable in almost every other way, and low mood in each has a different texture: one is often the exhaustion of keeping a good life running, the other is more often the weight of hours, money and health. The steel heritage survives in firms like Sheffield Forgemasters, and so does a habit of not making a fuss.

What actually happens in depression counselling?

Depression counselling here is steady and structured: we focus on the low mood, lost motivation and disconnection affecting you now, and on rebuilding the energy, routine and self-worth that hold a day together.

Because the work itself is the same wherever you live, the detail sits in one place rather than all of them: the main depression counselling page sets out the methods, how I work, sessions and fees covers the practicalities, and my BACP registration covers accountability.

What do I need for an online session?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Because I work from Hove, there is no room in this city and everything is done by secure video. When you are low that removes the step people most often stall at, which is getting out and across town. From Nether Edge or Hillsborough it needs a quiet corner and a link, nothing else. We keep one fixed appointment each week, and if you miss it we pick things up next time rather than treating it as a failure or a fresh start.

Depression Counselling in Sheffield

Why people in Sheffield come for depression counselling

The counselling is steady and structured here, rather than exploratory. It starts with what your days actually contain, because low mood strips out routine early and then presents the empty week as evidence about your character. So we rebuild deliberately small: a consistent waking time, food that needs no effort, a short walk, one person contacted. You choose them, they are set low enough to be doable on a bad day, and we review what happened without moralising about it. Motivation is treated as something that follows action, not a prerequisite for it. Underneath, in time, we look at whatever emptied the tank: a bereavement, a long illness, a career that stopped meaning anything. NHS Sheffield Talking Therapies takes self-referrals for depression, and Sheffield Mind offers groups and practical support that sit well alongside private counselling.

Finding support in Sheffield

My online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Sheffield, you can refer yourself directly to NHS Sheffield Talking Therapies for free NHS talking therapy, with no GP referral needed.

Private sessions with me usually mean you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout; I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

If you need urgent help now

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.

Sheffield questions

Online Depression Counselling in Sheffield: common questions

I keep cancelling things and then feeling worse. How does that break?

Slowly and on purpose. Cancelling brings instant relief and a longer bill in guilt and isolation, so we work on making commitments small enough to keep rather than aiming at the ones you have been dropping. Success is deliberately unambitious at the beginning.

What do sessions cost with you?

Following the free 15-minute consultation, appointments are £80 / 60 min. Longer sessions are available at £100 / 90 min and £120 / 120 min if you would rather have more time. There is no package to buy and no minimum commitment of any kind.

Should I go to NHS Sheffield Talking Therapies as well?

It is usually worth doing both. They accept self-referrals for low mood, it costs nothing to join their list, and having an NHS assessment underway gives you options later. Working with me now has no effect on your position with them.

My mood drops every winter and lifts in spring. Is that worth counselling?

It is, particularly if the pattern is predictable, because a predictable pattern can be prepared for. We look at light, sleep timing and the plans that quietly get abandoned each autumn, and put supports in place before the drop rather than after it.

I have a decent life and no reason to feel like this. Does that make it worse?

That comparison is one of the heaviest parts, and it is also inaccurate. Low mood does not check your circumstances first, and having no obvious cause is common. The guilt about feeling it usually costs more than the original flatness does.

Isn't depression just something you should push through?

Many people here are raised to think so, but pushing through alone often deepens it. Counselling gives the low mood somewhere to go and someone to think it through with. Meeting online lowers the bar to starting, since there's no trip across the hills to manage first.

How quickly could I begin depression counselling online in Sheffield?

Often within a week of your free 15-minute call. When you're low, climbing Sheffield's hills to an appointment can feel impossible, so meeting by secure video from home in Walkley or Heeley removes that. I work from Hove and we'd settle a steady weekly time.

Is paying privately worth it when Sheffield has NHS depression services?

NHS talking therapies here are free and worth using; the usual trade-off is a wait and less choice of time. I charge £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for two hours, after a free consultation, and can usually start sooner with a consistent slot.

Does online counselling work for depression, or is in person better in Sheffield?

Online suits many people. When getting out feels like too much, meeting by secure video from home takes the effort out of attending. I'm in Hove, not Sheffield, and can offer evening times so a session doesn't add to an already draining day.
