Life in Hull

What brings people in Hull to counselling?

Work in Hull often runs to a rota rather than a week. The port and offshore wind sector send people away for stretches at a time, and whoever stays behind, in Bransholme or off Anlaby Road, gets very good at managing alone. Then the other one comes home and you have four days to find each other again. Shift patterns at Hull University Teaching Hospitals do the same thing in reverse, one of you asleep while the other is awake. Add money that will not stretch and the old feeling of being at the end of the line, and a couple can go months without a conversation that is not logistics. Nothing dramatic has happened. You have simply stopped meeting.

What is relationship counselling, in practice?

Relationship counselling here, for couples or individuals, slows down the pattern you are caught in and builds healthier ways of hearing and being heard.

Because the work itself is the same wherever you live, the detail sits in one place rather than all of them: everything on relationship counselling sets out the methods, how I work covers the practicalities, and qualifications, registration and ethics covers accountability.

What happens in an online session?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Bradley is in Hove, so all of this is done by secure video, which suits a city where nobody's working day matches anybody else's. You can attend together from one sofa off Newland Avenue, or log in separately if one of you is away on a rotation. Coming on your own is completely normal and often where the useful work starts. A free 15-minute consultation comes first, then a regular weekly slot that holds steady even when everything else in the month moves.

Relationship Counselling in Hull

Why people in Hull come for relationship counselling

The things people bring are ordinary and heavy. Arguments that begin over nothing and finish somewhere neither of you meant to go. A silence that has quietly become the arrangement. Drinking that stopped being social a while back. In Hull, 29% of adults reported a high anxiety score in 2022/23, above the England average of 23.8%, and anxiety at that level rarely stays inside one person: it comes out as a short fuse, as checking, as one of you going very still at the kitchen table. Much of the work is slowing that down until each of you hears what the other is actually saying, not what you expect. Your partner does not have to agree to any of it. NHS Hull Talking Therapies, which most people know as Let's Talk Hull, takes self-referrals for anxiety and low mood, and Hull and East Yorkshire Mind runs support across the city. If drink is part of the strain, ReNew Hull is the free confidential service. Any of those can run alongside.

Hull questions

Online Relationship Counselling in Hull: common questions

Can I start relationship counselling on my own while my partner is away offshore?

Yes, and it is a common way to begin. You can look honestly at your part in the pattern without your partner in the room, and change in one person shifts the whole thing. If they want to join later when the rotation ends, they can, from wherever they happen to be.

What does it cost, and do a couple pay twice?

No. The fee is per session, not per person: £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 minutes and £120 for 120 minutes, whether one of you is there or both. Couples often prefer 90 minutes so there is room for two accounts of the same week. The introductory 15-minute call costs nothing, whether one of you joins it or both.

Should we try Let's Talk Hull first?

You can do both. NHS Hull Talking Therapies, known as Let's Talk Hull, takes self-referrals and is worth starting if anxiety or low mood is the main thing for either of you. It is built around the individual rather than the couple, so relationship work usually sits alongside it rather than replacing it.

We live in a small house with the kids about. Where are we supposed to sit for this?

People manage it in all sorts of ways: a bedroom with the door shut, a car outside, one of you at the kitchen table with headphones after bedtime. Video removes the trip across town, which for many families in Hull is the thing that would have stopped them booking at all.

My partner says our problem is money and the shifts, not us. Is counselling still the answer?

Often they are half right. Insecure work and a tight month genuinely put pressure on a relationship, and counselling will not pay a bill. What it can change is what the two of you do to each other under that pressure, which is usually the part that has started to feel permanent.

The nearest couples counselling feels miles away. Does online reach us?

Yes. Because sessions run by video from Hove, where you live in Hull makes no difference, there is no long drive for either partner. You both join from home, or from wherever each of you can speak freely, at a time that suits your week.

How soon can a couple in Hull start relationship counselling with you?

Usually within a week or two of a free 15-minute consultation. I am based in Hove and meet Hull couples securely online, from the Avenues to the Old Town, so distance from other cities is no barrier and there is no waiting list to join.

What do you charge couples in Hull, and could we go through the NHS?

Most couples choose 90 minutes at £100, or 60 minutes at £80. Relate and NHS services in Hull can cost less but often involve a wait, while private online work means we can begin sooner and keep a reliable weekly time that suits you both.

With shift work on the docks, can evening or flexible sessions be arranged?

Yes. Since we meet by video you can join together from home in Hull, or from two places if one partner is away offshore or working late. I keep some evening slots, so sessions can sit around shifts rather than competing with them.
