In and around York
Life in York
York is a city that is permanently on show, and couples here often live behind the same polished front. Visitors fill the streets, the houses are pretty, and the cost of living inside the walls has made a lot of ordinary households quietly stretched. Work in the city's tourism and heritage sector runs to weekends and seasons, so one of you is busiest when the other is finally free. From Bishopthorpe to Huntington the story tends to be the same when it eventually gets told: nothing scandalous has happened, we are polite, we manage the diary well, and we have not really reached each other for a long time. Admitting that in a place this presentable can feel almost embarrassing.

Relationship counselling here, for couples or individuals, slows down the pattern you are caught in and builds healthier ways of hearing and being heard.
Rather than say the same thing on every page, the substance lives on everything on relationship counselling, with how I work, sessions and fees for the practical questions and my credentials and registration for registration and ethics.
Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.
Everything for York is done by secure video, as Bradley is in Hove and there is nowhere here to sit down together in person. In a compact city where you will be seen, that anonymity counts. You can join from the kitchen table in Acomb once the house is quiet, together on one screen or separately if a weekend shift gets in the way. There is a free 15-minute call first, then a weekly appointment that stays put through the busy season.

Relationship Counselling in York
Couples usually come because of distance, because trust has gone, or because one person's anxiety or low mood has begun to set the temperature of the whole house. That first one is more common here than the postcard suggests: 26.2% of adults in York reported a high anxiety score in 2022/23, above the England average of 23.8%. Anxiety at that level shows up between partners as irritability, as reassurance-seeking that never quite lands, and as one of you managing the other instead of talking to them. Sessions work on the loop the two of you repeat and on saying the honest thing without it turning into a row. Coming alone is a legitimate way to start. In England the NHS Talking Therapies finder takes free self-referrals for individual support, York Mind runs local services, and York Drug and Alcohol Service is free and confidential if drinking is part of it.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.
Book a free 15-minute callMy online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In York, you can refer yourself directly to NHS talking therapies for anxiety and depression, with no GP referral needed. You can find support through the NHS Talking Therapies finder.
Private sessions with me usually mean you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout; I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.
York questions
It seems to. Living somewhere that appears effortless makes private difficulty feel like a personal failure rather than an ordinary thing. Nobody is assessed on how bad it has got. If the two of you are unhappy, that is a sufficient reason to book.
No. The fee is for the session, not the person: £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for 120. Two people generally need the 90 minutes to both be properly heard. That first 15-minute consultation is free and binds you to nothing.
The NHS Talking Therapies finder allows anyone in England to self-refer without a GP visit, at no charge, and York Mind runs local support as well. Both are aimed at the individual rather than the couple, so they sit alongside relationship work rather than doing the same job.
Yes. Seasonal and weekend work is the norm in this city, and the appointment is set around it rather than the other way round. Because there is no travelling, an hour between shifts is genuinely usable, and weeks where only one of you attends still count.
It is real, and counselling will not change the figures. What it can change is what the pressure has turned the two of you into with each other, because most money arguments are also arguments about fairness, blame and who is allowed to be tired.
Much easier. Working online from Hove means no walk through the tourist crowds and no parking within the walls to sort. You both join from home in York or another private space, at a time that fits around work and family.
Usually within a week or two of a free 15-minute consultation. I am based in Hove and meet York couples securely online, from Clifton to Fulford, so there is no waiting list and no need to find a room or parking together inside the walls.
Most couples choose 90 minutes at £100, or 60 minutes at £80. Relate and NHS services in York can cost less but often involve a wait, while private online work lets us start sooner and keep a reliable weekly time for you both.
That sense of things looking fine on the surface is common in York, and online sessions stay wholly private. We can meet together or from two places around a commute, and I keep some evening slots so sessions fit a demanding week.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
Also available online across Yorkshire & North East: Leeds, Hull, Harrogate. See all of Yorkshire & North East.
If relationship counselling is not quite what you are looking for, counselling and therapy, trauma counselling and addiction counselling may fit better in York.
