Life in Leeds

Why people in Leeds get in touch

There are two Leeds, and low mood shows up differently in each. In Roundhay or Chapel Allerton it often looks like a good job done joylessly for a year too long. In Holbeck or Armley it looks like being ground down by insecure hours and bills that arrive faster than wages. Recorded depression on GP registers stood at 13% of adults in 2024/25, below the England average of 14.3%, which mostly tells you how many people in a busy, capable city never mention it to anyone. The centre is loud and full and open late, and that can make a flat, quiet week feel like a private failure rather than an illness.

What does depression counselling involve?

Depression counselling here is steady and structured: we focus on the low mood, lost motivation and disconnection affecting you now, and on rebuilding the energy, routine and self-worth that hold a day together.

Rather than say the same thing on every page, the substance lives on the depression counselling page, with session lengths and fees for the practical questions and qualifications, registration and ethics for registration and ethics.

How do online sessions actually work?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Because I work from Hove, there is no room here and everything happens by secure video. With depression that removes the step people most often fail at, which is getting out of the door and across the city. From Meanwood, Morley or Pudsey, all it needs is a quiet half hour and a link. We fix the same slot every week and keep it, because when the days have lost their shape one reliable appointment starts doing real work on its own.

Depression Counselling in Leeds

Why people in Leeds come for depression counselling

Depression in a city like this is often noticed last by the person carrying it. Work still gets done, because work is the thing with deadlines, and everything else silently stops: cooking properly, answering messages, going anywhere that is not required. The work we do is steady and structured. We begin with routine rather than mood, since waiting to feel motivated is the trap itself, and build back a few small repeatable things you have agreed to rather than ones I have prescribed. Sleep and movement come early, because both are levers you can actually pull. Then we look underneath, at what has been draining you for years. Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service accepts self-referrals for low mood as the city's NHS Talking Therapies route, and Leeds Mind offers groups and peer support that can run alongside private counselling.

Finding support in Leeds

My online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Leeds, you can refer yourself directly to Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service for free NHS talking therapy, with no GP referral needed.

Private sessions with me usually mean you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout; I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

If you need urgent help now

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.

Leeds questions

Online Depression Counselling in Leeds: common questions

I am still holding everything together at work. Does that mean it is not depression?

No. Holding a job together is common, and it is often the last thing to go, which is exactly why people leave it so long. If everything outside working hours has emptied out, that pattern is worth taking seriously whatever you want to call it.

What does this cost if I want a weekly session?

The consultation is free and lasts 15 minutes. Sessions are then £80 / 60 min, or £100 / 90 min and £120 / 120 min if you want more time. Nothing is paid in advance as a block, so you are never locked into a course you have stopped wanting.

Should I contact Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service as well?

It is worth doing. They are the NHS Talking Therapies service for the city, they take self-referrals for depression, and being on their list does not stop you working with me now. Plenty of people begin privately and see what the NHS assessment offers when it arrives.

I have lost all motivation. How can talking possibly help with that?

It helps because we do not rely on motivation. We choose actions small enough to do while still feeling nothing at all, then look at what happened afterwards. Motivation tends to arrive after movement rather than before it, which is the opposite of what low mood keeps insisting.

Everyone around me in Leeds seems busy and fine. Is that just how it looks?

Largely, yes. A dense city shows you other people's public hours and none of their private ones. Comparing your inside to somebody's commute is a losing exercise, and part of the work is noticing how often that comparison runs and how much it costs you.

I struggle to leave the house when I'm low, is that a problem?

Not at all. Because sessions are online, you don't have to face a trip into the centre on the days that feel hardest. You can join from home, which for many people makes it far easier to keep going with counselling when depression saps motivation.

How quickly can I begin depression counselling online in Leeds?

Often within a week. When motivation is low, avoiding a cross-city journey helps; you join by secure video from home in Roundhay, Chapel Allerton or wherever's private. We start with a free 15-minute call, then agree a regular weekly time from my Hove base.

Is private depression counselling worth it when Leeds has NHS options?

NHS talking therapies in Leeds are free and worth using; the trade-off is often a wait and less flexibility. I charge £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for two hours, after a free consultation, and can usually start sooner and hold one consistent slot.

Would online counselling work for depression, or is in person better in Leeds?

Online works well for many people. Getting out of the house can feel like too much when you're low, so meeting by secure video removes that hurdle entirely. I'm in Hove, not Leeds, and can offer evening times so sessions don't add to an already heavy day.
