In and around Sheffield
Life in Sheffield
Sheffield is a green city on the edge of the Peak, proud of its steel heritage and shaped by its loss. A large student population, an economy rebuilt after heavy industry, and real contrasts between leafy and hard-pressed neighbourhoods all shape the pressures people carry.
Sheffield spreads across seven hills between the rivers Don and Sheaf, England's greenest large city and the only one with a national park inside its boundary, the Peak District rises straight from its western suburbs. The steel and cutlery that made its name have given way to the two universities and the advanced manufacturing works out towards Rotherham, while the old works around Kelham Island now house bars and studios. The Supertram loops through the centre past the Crucible and the Winter Garden, and leafy Ecclesall and Nether Edge climb towards Crookes and Walkley. Meadowhall sits to the east by the M1, but the pull for many is west, up onto the moors and the gritstone edges.
Where the old industries have gone and there is a strong culture of just getting on with things, online keeps support discreet and within reach however stretched the week.
Sheffield hosts the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (the Northern General and Royal Hallamshire hospitals); its steel heritage survives in firms such as Sheffield Forgemasters.

Psychotherapy here goes a little deeper and usually a little longer than counselling, into the patterns, beliefs and early relationships that shape how you feel now, so change is understood at the root and holds.
The approach is the same wherever you live, so rather than repeat it on every page you can read it in full, the methods, what each session covers and fees, on the main psychotherapy page and on how I work.
Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link held to the same strict BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, you join each session from any private space using a phone, tablet or laptop, no software to install, no waiting room and no journey at either end.
I work from a base in Hove and see people in Sheffield online, by secure video call, rather than in person. That means the hills and the tram never come into it, you can meet from home or a quiet room, and we keep a steady weekly time that fits around work, study or family without a journey across the city. Sessions come to you wherever you can talk privately.

When the same difficulty keeps returning in different forms.
How early bonds still shape the way you connect now.
Working with a harsh inner voice and a shaky sense of self.
When something unresolved keeps replaying beneath the surface.
Understanding the root, not just quieting the symptom.
Insight that holds, so change does not slip back.
Psychotherapy in Sheffield
Sometimes the low mood or unease people carry in Sheffield runs deeper than the present job or worry, a long-standing pattern that keeps returning whatever changes around it. Psychotherapy is the slower work of understanding those roots, the ways of coping and relating laid down long ago that still shape how you see yourself now. Rather than only easing this week's pressure, it makes room to explore your story and loosen what keeps you stuck. I offer this longer-term work online from Hove to people across Sheffield, at a regular, dependable hour that distance never interrupts.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.

Sheffield questions
Yes. I work with people right across Sheffield, from the centre and Kelham Island outwards, and anywhere else in Yorkshire & North East, by secure video, no need to travel to Hove, and just as confidential as meeting in the room.
Psychotherapy usually goes deeper and longer, into the patterns, beliefs and early relationships shaping how you feel now, rather than only the present difficulty. It suits people who notice the same things keep coming round.
Not necessarily, but depth work benefits from time. We agree the pace and depth together and review as we go, so it stays led by you.
Only where it helps make sense of the present. We follow what is alive and relevant for you, gently, never forcing a return to anything before you are ready.
Psychotherapy takes time because it looks beneath the surface, at the roots of patterns that shorter work can only skim. For long-standing or returning difficulties, that depth often matters. I offer it online from Hove, at a regular weekly hour, to people across Sheffield.
Yes. Deeper, open-ended psychotherapy works well by secure video, and I offer it to clients across Sheffield from my room in Hove. With no local waiting list, we can usually begin the weekly work within a week or two of your free 15-minute consultation.
Weekly 60-minute sessions are GBP 80, with 90 minutes at GBP 100 when the work calls for it. The NHS seldom funds long-term psychotherapy and deeper waits can be lengthy, so many Sheffield clients choose private online sessions to start and continue without a break.
Many clients find it does. A steady weekly video session, joined from the same quiet room in Sheffield, gives this work the continuity it relies on. I offer some evening slots, and since nothing hinges on travel the sessions carry on even through a stretched week.
No, I'm on the south coast in Hove and work with Sheffield clients over secure video. Plenty of people prefer that: there's no trip into the centre or out to the university, and you can talk from wherever feels private, whether that's home in Crookes or Nether Edge or a quiet corner elsewhere.
Yes. Working online means term times, placements and trips home don't interrupt things, we can carry on by video wherever you are. It's worth knowing I'm a private counsellor, separate from the university's own wellbeing services, which you're also free to draw on.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
