In and around Hove
Life in Hove
Feeling flat in a place as pleasant as this has a loneliness of its own. Hove is calm, well kept and easy on the eye, and when depression settles in, all of that turns into a reproach. People describe walking along the lawns and feeling nothing, or looking at St Ann's Well Gardens in spring and registering that it should be lovely without any of it landing. The days lose their markers. Meals slide about, sleep goes wrong at both ends, the washing piles up on a chair. Neighbours are polite rather than close, so weeks can pass in which nobody has asked how you actually are, and you have not volunteered it either.

Depression counselling here is steady and structured: we focus on the low mood, lost motivation and disconnection affecting you now, and on rebuilding the energy, routine and self-worth that hold a day together.
Rather than say the same thing on every page, the substance lives on the full depression counselling page, with how I work for the practical questions and my credentials and registration for registration and ethics.
Sessions take place in a private, comfortable room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove, held to the strict BACP confidentiality you would expect. We begin with a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, and the same sessions are available by secure video if travelling is difficult or you would simply prefer it.
The room is in central Hove, so most people living locally can walk or take a short bus ride, which removes one of the usual obstacles when energy is low. Online sessions by secure video are equally available. With depression, having somewhere to be at a fixed time each week often does part of the work on its own, and being close by makes that far more sustainable than a long trip would be.

Depression Counselling in Hove
Depression is a condition with mechanics, not a personality defect, and it responds to being worked on in a particular order. We start with an honest audit of the week, including the parts that feel humiliating to describe. Sleep is addressed first, because everything else is harder while it is disrupted. Then daylight and movement, then contact with people, then activity that carries some meaning for you. The steps are deliberately small, since in low mood doing comes before feeling like it rather than the other way round. Recorded depression on GP registers here stood at 14.1% of patients aged 18 and over in 2024/25, just under the England average of 14.3%. For free support the Brighton and Hove Wellbeing Service takes self-referrals, and Mind in Brighton and Hove is well worth knowing about.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.
Book a free 15-minute callMy counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Hove, you can refer yourself directly to the Brighton and Hove Wellbeing Service for free NHS talking therapy, with no GP referral needed.
Seeing me privately usually means you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout, working at greater depth and pace; the two can run side by side, and I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.
Hove questions
In a private room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove. The office sits on Western Road in central Hove, a few minutes' walk from Palmeira Square and the seafront, and a short bus ride from Hove Station. Every service is also available by secure video across the UK, so you can meet from any private space in Hove or blend the two.
It is a 15-minute phone call. You say as much or as little as you want about what has been happening, I describe how the sessions work and roughly what to expect, and then you go away and think about it. Nothing is booked during that call unless you want it to be.
Each hour is £80, with £100 and £120 options for longer appointments. The number varies a great deal between people, so I would rather review it with you every few weeks than quote a figure now. There is nothing to pay for the opening 15-minute call.
Usually, yes. The Brighton and Hove Wellbeing Service is free, takes self-referrals for low mood and offers structured sessions. Recorded depression on city GP registers was 14.1% of patients aged 18 and over in 2024/25. Being on their list costs nothing while private work is under way.
It makes them convenient, which is not quite the same thing. Some people who live nearby still prefer video, because getting dressed and out is the hardest part on a bad week. Proximity gives you the option rather than the obligation.
Light does affect mood, and this coast has long dark stretches. It is rarely the whole story though, and treating it as the sole cause can mean the other factors go unexamined. We would look at seasonal patterns alongside sleep, activity and everything else.
Very likely. My room is on Western Road in central Hove, close to Brunswick, Palmeira and the lawns, so many local clients simply walk in for a weekly session. When getting out feels hard, we can meet online by secure video instead.
Start with a free fifteen-minute call, then a first appointment at 65-67 Western Road. When motivation is low, the short walk in from Brunswick, Poets Corner or the seafront is about as easy as it gets, and buses run along Western and Church Road. Online is there too.
Sessions are £80 for sixty minutes, £100 for ninety and £120 for two hours, after a free consultation. Free NHS Talking Therapies for Brighton & Hove accepts self-referrals without a GP, but waiting can sap momentum; private sessions let work on low mood begin straight away.
Both suit depression. On flat days, video spares you even the short walk; other weeks, getting out to the room and across St Ann's Well Gardens can help. We can alternate freely, and evening and weekend appointments fit around unpredictable energy.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
Also available nearby: Brighton, Portslade, Hangleton, Preston Park. See all areas I cover.
