Life in Peacehaven

Why people in Peacehaven get in touch

Winter on this stretch of coast is honest about itself. The light goes early, the wind gets up, and the long straight avenues towards Telscombe Cliffs empty out. Summer brings walkers along the clifftop and people out at Centenary Park; by November it can feel like a different town entirely. Depression takes that shape here. The world contracts to the house, then to one room, then to the sofa. Getting to Brighton for anything starts to look like an expedition, so it stops happening, and the fewer reasons there are to leave the street the heavier the whole thing becomes. Recorded depression on GP registers reached 17.4% in 2024/25, well above the England average of 14.3%.

What would we do together in depression counselling?

Depression counselling here is steady and structured: we focus on the low mood, lost motivation and disconnection affecting you now, and on rebuilding the energy, routine and self-worth that hold a day together.

The method travels; only the geography changes. depression counselling in detail explains it properly, the practical side answers the practical questions, and my credentials and registration shows how the practice is held to account.

How do sessions work, in person or online?

Sessions take place in a private, comfortable room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove, held to the strict BACP confidentiality you would expect. We begin with a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, and the same sessions are available by secure video if travelling is difficult or you would simply prefer it.

Secure video means low mood does not have to beat the appointment. On the days when the drive west would simply not happen, the session still does. When you want to be somewhere other than the house, the room in central Hove is twenty to twenty-five minutes along the coast road, and that small outing sometimes does as much good as the hour itself. Most people settle into whichever pattern they can keep up reliably.

Depression Counselling in Peacehaven

Why people in Peacehaven come for depression counselling

Depression work is structured, unhurried and quite concrete. Rather than circling how bad things feel, it looks at what your days are made of and starts rebuilding them at a size you can actually manage: a set waking time, one short walk along the clifftop, one bit of contact with another person, one job that has been sitting there. Energy tends to come back after the activity rather than before it. Alongside that we work on the flat, self-blaming commentary that keeps everything grey, and on isolation, which on the coast can build without anyone noticing. Health in Mind takes self-referrals for low mood across East Sussex and is free at the point of use. Private sessions can run alongside that or on their own, whichever suits.

Finding support in Peacehaven

My counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Peacehaven, you can refer yourself directly to Health in Mind, the East Sussex NHS Talking Therapies service for free NHS talking therapy, with no GP referral needed.

Seeing me privately usually means you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout, working at greater depth and pace; the two can run side by side, and I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

Other local and national support verified for this area includes:

If you need urgent help now

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.

Peacehaven questions

Depression Counselling in Peacehaven: common questions

Where do Peacehaven sessions take place, and can I meet online instead?

In a private room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove. From Peacehaven the coast road runs west through Saltdean and Brighton to the Hove office in around twenty to twenty-five minutes. Every service is also available by secure video across the UK, so you can meet from any private space in Peacehaven or blend the two.

I cannot face the coast road most weeks. Can this still work?

Not at all. The whole of this work can be done by secure video from your own front room, and for many people in Peacehaven that is the sensible default. Travelling to Hove stays available whenever you want it, but it is never a condition of being seen.

What are the fees?

You pay £80 for a 60-minute session. Ninety minutes is £100 and two hours is £120 if a longer appointment would help. The first 15-minute consultation is free and carries no expectation that you book anything afterwards. Payment is session by session.

Can I refer myself to Health in Mind for low mood?

You can, without seeing a GP first. Health in Mind covers East Sussex and offers guided self-help, courses and short therapy. There is often a wait, and the number of sessions is capped, so people sometimes use it alongside private work rather than instead of it.

Everything shuts down here in winter and I sink with it. Is that treatable?

It is certainly workable. Seasonal patterns are predictable, which is an advantage: you can plan for them. Sessions look at light, routine, movement and contact through the darker months, and at what has helped in previous winters, so the drop is smaller and shorter next time round.

How long does this normally go on for?

Often three to six months of weekly hours, then less often as things steady. Some people want a handful of sessions to get moving again. It is reviewed openly as you go, and you are free to stop whenever you judge you have got what you came for.

Can I have depression counselling online from Peacehaven?

Yes. Many Peacehaven clients choose secure video sessions, which spare the coast-road trip and bring the same steady support home. When you would rather come in, my Hove room is around twenty-five minutes west. We can also blend the two however suits you.

How do I arrange depression counselling and get to Hove from Peacehaven?

When motivation is low, I keep it simple: a free fifteen-minute call, then a first session. The coast road west through Saltdean and Brighton to Hove takes twenty to twenty-five minutes, or the 12 and 14 buses with a change. If leaving home feels hard, we can begin online.

How much is depression counselling, and how does it compare to NHS support in Peacehaven?

Sessions are £80 for an hour, £100 for ninety minutes and £120 for two, after a free consultation. Free NHS Talking Therapies for East Sussex takes self-referrals without a GP, though waits can stall progress; starting privately means help with low mood begins now.

Can I have depression counselling online from Peacehaven, or is coming in better, and are evenings available?

Either works for depression. Out on the clifftops, online from home spares the journey on flat days, while the trip into Hove can lift things on others. We can alternate, and evening and weekend appointments suit when energy is unpredictable.
