Life in Newhaven
Newhaven is a place of comings and goings, and it can feel oddly still if you are the one staying put. Low mood here often follows a change: hours cut, a contract ending, a relationship finishing, or simply a long stretch where nothing seems to shift. The days lose their edges. People describe sitting in the same chair from morning to evening in a flat off Meeching Road, or driving past Newhaven Fort without registering it, or letting the post pile up unopened. Recorded depression on GP registers across East Sussex stood at 17.4% of patients aged 18 and over in 2024/25, well above the England average of 14.3%.

Depression counselling here is steady and structured: we focus on the low mood, lost motivation and disconnection affecting you now, and on rebuilding the energy, routine and self-worth that hold a day together.
The method travels; only the geography changes. the main depression counselling page explains it properly, how I work, sessions and fees answers the practical questions, and how to check my registration shows how the practice is held to account.
Sessions take place in a private, comfortable room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove, held to the strict BACP confidentiality you would expect. We begin with a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, and the same sessions are available by secure video if travelling is difficult or you would simply prefer it.
You can be seen in person in Hove, twenty-five minutes west along the coast or by train through Lewes, and online sessions by secure video are available for the same work. Depression makes any distance feel longer, so the choice needs to be made for a difficult week rather than an easy one. Some people find that a fixed appointment somewhere else gives the week a spine it has been missing.

Depression Counselling in Newhaven
Counselling for low mood works best when it is structured and slow enough to succeed at. We begin with an honest picture of the week, including the hours that vanish and the parts that are uncomfortable to describe. Sleep is tackled first, and it needs particular attention where shifts have wrecked any pattern at all. Then daylight, then movement, then contact with people, then whatever used to matter to you. Nothing is set up as a target you might fail at, because failure is exactly what low mood is looking for. Health in Mind, the East Sussex NHS Talking Therapies service, takes self-referrals at no charge, and STAR - East Sussex Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service is there if drinking has quietly become part of how the evenings go. Progress in this work tends to be measured in weeks rather than sessions.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.
Book a free 15-minute callMy counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Newhaven, you can refer yourself directly to Health in Mind, the East Sussex NHS Talking Therapies service for free NHS talking therapy, with no GP referral needed.
Seeing me privately usually means you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout, working at greater depth and pace; the two can run side by side, and I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.
Newhaven questions
In a private room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove. From Newhaven it is around twenty-five minutes west along the coast through Peacehaven and Brighton to Hove, or a train via Lewes. Every service is also available by secure video across the UK, so you can meet from any private space in Newhaven or blend the two.
Not long. A free 15-minute call can normally be arranged within days, and sessions usually begin within a week or two of it. No referral is needed. Starting online and moving to the room in Hove later is a perfectly normal way to go about it.
An hour of counselling is £80. Longer appointments are £100 for ninety minutes and £120 for two hours, though the weekly hour suits most people doing this work. The initial 15-minute conversation is free and there is no obligation to book afterwards.
It is worth doing. Health in Mind takes self-referrals for depression across East Sussex, free of charge, in a county where recorded depression reached 17.4% of patients aged 18 and over in 2024/25. Waits reflect that, so many people also begin privately.
It is not. Long-standing low mood responds to the same steady work, though it usually takes a little longer to shift than something recent. People often say afterwards that they wish they had not waited, which is worth hearing but not worth punishing yourself over.
Quite a lot, actually. Short days and a quiet town remove the structure and contact that hold mood up, so we build both back deliberately rather than waiting for spring. Daylight, routine and some regular contact with other people do more than people expect.
With a free fifteen-minute call, no obligation, just a chance to see if we fit. From there we can meet in my Hove room, around twenty-five minutes west, or online, whatever feels easier. There is no pressure and no judgement.
When motivation is low, I keep booking simple: a free fifteen-minute call, then a first session. The coast road west takes about twenty-five minutes, or a train via Lewes from Newhaven Town, changing for Hove. If leaving home feels hard, we can begin online instead.
Sessions are £80 for sixty minutes, £100 for ninety and £120 for two hours, after a free consultation. Free NHS Talking Therapies for East Sussex accepts self-referrals without a GP, though waits can drain momentum; private sessions mean help with low mood starts straight away.
Either suits depression. Given the longer journey, online from home spares the trip on flat days, while getting out to Hove can be a lift on others. We can alternate, and evening and weekend appointments suit when energy is unpredictable.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
