Life in Newhaven

What is going on for people in Newhaven?

Work sets the pace in Newhaven, and it does not always keep sociable hours. The port runs to its own timetable, the ferry comes and goes, and plenty of households here are organised around somebody being out when everyone else is in. Money is often tight and rarely discussed properly, which is its own kind of silence between two people. Up on the hill in Denton, or along Fort Road, there are couples who have not fallen out so much as fallen out of step. Asking for help does not come naturally in a town that prides itself on getting on with things, and counselling can feel like something other people do.

What does relationship counselling involve?

Relationship counselling here, for couples or individuals, slows down the pattern you are caught in and builds healthier ways of hearing and being heard.

The approach does not change with the postcode, so rather than repeat it on every page you can read it in full, the methods and what each session covers, on the full relationship counselling page, alongside session lengths and fees and my credentials and registration.

Where do we meet, and what happens?

Sessions take place in a private, comfortable room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove, held to the strict BACP confidentiality you would expect. We begin with a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, and the same sessions are available by secure video if travelling is difficult or you would simply prefer it.

Hove is around twenty-five minutes west by car along the coast, or a train from either of the town stations by way of Lewes. That is a real journey rather than a hop, so appointments tend to be set at a time you can keep. Coming separately or together both work. When the trip is too much money or too much effort in a given week, the same session runs online by secure video.

Relationship Counselling in Newhaven

Why people in Newhaven come for relationship counselling

Couples here often arrive worn down rather than blown apart. Shift patterns that mean you barely overlap. Money worries that turn into short tempers and then into silence. One of you drinking a bit more each year, in a way that has never been named out loud. Or a long stretch of low mood that has left the other person doing all the emotional work without ever agreeing to it. GP registers in East Sussex recorded depression in 17.4% of adults aged 18 and over in 2024/25, noticeably higher than the England figure of 14.3%. In sessions we slow the exchanges that keep failing until the request underneath the complaint becomes audible. Repair after broken trust is treated as a build over months. Coming alone is common and useful. For the free NHS route, Health in Mind accepts self-referrals across East Sussex.

Newhaven questions

Relationship Counselling in Newhaven: common questions

Where do Newhaven sessions take place, and can I meet online instead?

In a private room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove. From Newhaven it is around twenty-five minutes west along the coast through Peacehaven and Brighton to Hove, or a train via Lewes. Every service is also available by secure video across the UK, so you can meet from any private space in Newhaven or blend the two.

Neither of us has ever done anything like this. What actually happens?

You talk and I ask questions. Nobody is judged, nothing is decided about who is at fault, and you are not asked to perform. The free 15-minute call beforehand exists so you can hear what it involves before committing anything, including money.

Money is tight. What does it cost and is there any flexibility?

An hour is £80, ninety minutes £100 and two hours £120, paid as you go with nothing upfront. Some couples move to fortnightly appointments to make it manageable over a longer period. The initial 15-minute consultation costs nothing, so finding out involves no outlay at all.

Is there an NHS route from Newhaven for relationship problems?

Health in Mind is the NHS Talking Therapies service for East Sussex and you can refer yourself without a GP appointment. It mainly does individual work on anxiety and low mood rather than couple sessions. If things ever feel unsafe, the Sussex Mental Healthline answers at any hour.

His shifts change every week. Can appointments move around that?

Within limits, yes, though a regular slot is easier to protect and generally works better. Some couples book a fixed time and one of them attends alone when the rota clashes. Online sessions help here too, since he can join from wherever he happens to be.

We have argued about money for years. Can counselling change that?

It can change how you argue about it, which is usually the part that does the damage. Money rows are rarely only about money; underneath there is often fear, or shame, or a sense of not being trusted. Naming that accurately tends to lower the temperature.

How do we get to relationship counselling from Newhaven?

By car the coast road west through Peacehaven and Brighton takes around twenty-five minutes. There is also a train via Lewes to Brighton and Hove, from Newhaven Town or Newhaven Harbour. Because the journey is a fair one, some couples prefer online video sessions from home.

How do I book relationship counselling and travel to Hove from Newhaven?

Start with a free fifteen-minute call, then come over for your session. From Newhaven the coast road runs west through Peacehaven and Brighton to Hove, around twenty-five minutes by car, or a train via Lewes to Brighton and on to Hove, then a short walk to the room.

What do couples pay, and is relationship counselling on the NHS in Newhaven?

Sessions are £80 for sixty minutes, £100 for ninety and £120 for two hours, after a free fifteen-minute consultation. The NHS rarely funds couples work, so most Newhaven clients choose private sessions, and with work and money pressures common here, the free consultation is a no-cost first step.

Can we attend together or meet online, and do you offer evenings for Newhaven?

Yes. Couples can come to the Hove room or share a secure video call from home, which many Newhaven clients find easier given the journey. Individuals are welcome alone. Evening slots suit work around the port and town, and you can mix the trip in with online sessions.
