In and around Newhaven
Life in Newhaven
Newhaven is a working town rather than a decorative one. The harbour and ferry terminal keep their own hours, the estuary weather comes straight up the Ouse, and a fair amount of life here is organised around shifts that do not match anyone else's. Odd hours are fertile ground for a habit. There is time alone before or after work, few people awake to notice, and a phone that will happily take a bet at three in the morning. Drinking, betting, spending or use of some kind moves into those gaps and quietly stays there. From the outside nothing has changed. You still get up, still turn out, still hold the job down, and the trouble stays entirely inside the house on Drove Road or Meeching Road.

Addiction counselling here treats the pain beneath the habit, not just the symptom, alcohol, drugs, gambling, food or behavioural, so recovery is something you grow into rather than force.
The method travels; only the geography changes. the full addiction counselling page explains it properly, how I work, sessions and fees answers the practical questions, and my BACP registration shows how the practice is held to account.
Sessions take place in a private, comfortable room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove, held to the strict BACP confidentiality you would expect. We begin with a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, and the same sessions are available by secure video if travelling is difficult or you would simply prefer it.
It is roughly twenty-five minutes west along the coast to Hove by car, or a train via Lewes if you would rather leave the driving out of it, and the room is on Western Road. That makes a fixed weekly appointment the simplest way to do this, so the journey becomes part of the routine rather than a decision. Where a shift or the weather makes travelling impossible, the session runs online by secure video.

Addiction Counselling in Newhaven
Addiction is used here in its widest sense. Alcohol and drugs are common reasons for getting in touch, and so are gambling accounts, gaming, spending and porn, particularly where the hours are irregular and the evenings are solitary. In every case something started out as relief, became reliable, and then began setting the terms. Sessions start by understanding what it has been carrying for you, because a habit taken away without that job being covered comes back sooner or later. Alcohol-related hospital admissions across the county were 499.3 per 100,000 in 2023/24, marginally below the England average of 504.1 per 100,000. Free structured treatment comes through East Sussex County Council's drug and alcohol support, delivered by STAR, and the Sussex Mental Healthline is available at any hour of the night.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.
Book a free 15-minute callMy counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Newhaven, free local drug and alcohol support is available through East Sussex County Council's drug and alcohol support.
For confidential information and advice, FRANK (on 0300 123 6600) and Drinkline on 0300 123 1110 are free, and Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART Recovery run peer-support meetings you can find online.
Other local and national support verified for this area includes:
This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.
If you drink heavily or use drugs daily, do not stop suddenly on your own. Withdrawal can cause seizures and can be dangerous. Speak to your GP or a local drug and alcohol service first, and they can arrange a safe, medically supported withdrawal. Counselling works alongside that, not instead of it.
Newhaven questions
In a private room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove. From Newhaven it is around twenty-five minutes west along the coast through Peacehaven and Brighton to Hove, or a train via Lewes. Every service is also available by secure video across the UK, so you can meet from any private space in Newhaven or blend the two.
They can. Times are arranged to suit the pattern you are actually working rather than a fixed weekly slot that keeps getting broken. A mix of travelling in and meeting by video usually covers the rest. Consistency over a month matters more than the same hour each week.
It does, and betting comes up often where there is dead time and a phone. There is nothing to smell or find, so it can run a long way before anyone asks. Sessions look at what it regulates and at the debt and secrecy that build up around it.
Yes. East Sussex County Council's drug and alcohol support leads to STAR, the East Sussex Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service, which is free and provides structured treatment and medical input. Private counselling can begin immediately and run alongside it without any conflict.
A free 15-minute consultation comes first, by phone or video, with nothing owed afterwards. Sessions are then £80 / 60 min, £100 / 90 min or £120 / 120 min, paid as you go. Nothing is bought as a block and no notice is needed to stop.
Most people manage it well, especially once the appointment has a fixed place in the week. The trip also gives the hour a clear edge either side. If the travel starts becoming the reason for cancelling, moving to video for a while solves it.
It is around twenty-five minutes west along the coast through Peacehaven and Brighton to Hove, or a train via Lewes. Online sessions are also available if travelling is difficult.
The coast road west through Peacehaven and Brighton to Hove takes around twenty-five minutes by car, or a train from Newhaven Town via Lewes to Brighton and on to Hove. Book a free fifteen-minute consultation first on 07914 681995 or online.
Sessions are £80 for sixty minutes, £100 for ninety and £120 for two hours, with a free first call. Newhaven is in East Sussex, so for free help you can self-refer to Change Grow Live East Sussex, the drug and alcohol service, without a GP.
Yes. Because the journey is a fair one, many Newhaven clients prefer secure video, which is just as private, though the coast drive or train to Hove is workable. Evening slots are available, and you can move between in-person and online as your week falls.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
