Life in Swansea

What is going on for people in Swansea?

Swansea is a city of neighbourhoods, and neighbourhoods are small. You might be anonymous in the centre and completely known in Clydach, Killay or St Thomas. After something frightening, that combination is difficult. There are people who would ask, and there are people you would rather never told. So you carry on as though nothing happened, and the effects go underground instead. Sleep that breaks in the same place each night. A flinch at something perfectly ordinary. A route you have quietly changed, a bus you no longer take, a whole part of the city given up without ever once explaining the reason for it to anybody.

What is trauma counselling, in practice?

Trauma counselling here is gentle and led by you, drawing on methods designed for trauma including the Human Givens Rewind Technique, so a difficult memory is returned to ordinary recall.

The method travels; only the geography changes. the full trauma counselling page explains it properly, session lengths and fees answers the practical questions, and how to check my registration shows how the practice is held to account.

How does meeting by video work in practice?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Trauma work here is conducted online by secure video from Hove. For this in particular, distance helps. Your counsellor has no connection to your street, your course, your workplace or anyone who knows you, and there is nowhere local for you to be seen going in. You stay somewhere familiar for the whole hour. When the session ends you are already at home rather than travelling while still raw.

Trauma Counselling in Swansea

Why people in Swansea come for trauma counselling

Very few people come because they want to revisit the past. They come because the past keeps interrupting the present: the sleep, the startle, the numbness, the sense of managing life from slightly behind glass. How quickly anything moves is decided by you, and that is structural rather than a courtesy. The opening work is stability and nothing else, meaning practical ways of settling that you have tested and can trust. Only after that does anything further happen. Where it is suitable, the Human Givens Rewind Technique can be offered, and the essential point is that it asks for no description of the event. You stay calm, you keep control, and stopping is always on the table. There is no local measure of trauma. The ONS anxiety rating for Swansea was 3.46 out of 10 for the year ending March 2023, above the Wales average of 3.3. Your GP is the NHS route to the local primary mental health support service, with Swansea Mind available in the city.

Swansea questions

Online Trauma Counselling in Swansea: common questions

Will I be asked to relive it?

No. That expectation puts many people off entirely, so it is worth being direct. The Rewind Technique requires no telling of the event, and in ordinary sessions the choice of what to say stays with you throughout. Nothing needs proving here.

What am I looking at per session?

An hour is charged at £80, ninety minutes at £100 and a two-hour session at £120. For trauma the longer format is often worth considering, since it allows time to settle at both ends. The 15-minute consultation before starting is free.

Is there NHS trauma support available in Swansea?

Your GP can refer you to the local primary mental health support service, and waiting times differ. Some people join that route while beginning private work at the same time. Swansea Mind is in the city, and CALL answers free on 0800 132 737.

It happened when I was a student here and I never told anyone. Too late?

Not remotely. Things left unspoken for years are extremely common in this work, and many people say that the first sentence is the hardest part of the whole business. Nothing becomes beyond help simply because it has waited, and old events often surface long afterwards.

Could this make things worse before it makes them better?

It is a fair concern and the answer shapes the whole approach. Because settling comes first and pace stays with you, sessions are built to be slowed or paused. The aim is that you finish each one steadier than you started, not stirred up.

I've carried this for years, is it too late for counselling to help?

It is not too late. Trauma can sit quietly for a long time and still respond to careful work once you feel ready. We go at your pace, by secure video, anywhere around Swansea. There is no timetable on healing and no rush.

How soon can trauma counselling start online for someone in Swansea?

We usually begin within a week or two, after a free 15-minute consultation to make sure the approach fits. Trauma work is paced carefully. Sessions run by secure video from Hove, so you can start from a place that feels safe, whether in Townhill, Sketty or out on Gower.

What do trauma sessions cost compared with NHS trauma help in Swansea?

NHS Wales trauma support through Swansea Bay is free but can involve assessment and waiting. Privately, I charge £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for two hours, with a free 15-minute consultation, so you can begin at a pace and time you choose.

Can trauma sessions in Swansea be held online and in the evening?

Yes. Trauma counselling works well by secure video, and some evening times are available. Being in your own safe space in Brynmill or Mumbles, rather than a clinic across the city, can help you feel more grounded. We only go at the pace that feels manageable for you.
