In and around Sunderland
Life in Sunderland
Sunderland runs on shifts. Nissan and the automotive sector set the clock for thousands of households, and a couple on opposite patterns can go a fortnight passing each other on the stairs. One of you comes off nights and sleeps through the afternoon the other has free. The conversation that needed having gets postponed again. Add the local conviction that you simply get on with things, inherited from the shipbuilding and glassmaking heritage that built this place, and you get two people who are loyal, hard-working and no longer talking. From Fulwell to Silksworth the complaint is usually the same when it finally arrives: we are fine, we just never see each other, and when we do we snap.

Relationship counselling here, for couples or individuals, slows down the pattern you are caught in and builds healthier ways of hearing and being heard.
The approach does not change with the postcode, so rather than repeat it on every page you can read it in full, the methods and what each session covers, on relationship counselling in detail, alongside how I work, sessions and fees and how to check my registration.
Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.
There is no room here to come to, since Bradley is in Hove, so everything runs by secure video. For shift-working couples that is less a compromise than the only version that works. Sessions can be set around a rota rather than around office hours, and you can be on one screen together at home in Washington or dial in separately when one of you is on lates. A free 15-minute call starts it off, and then a weekly time that both of you defend.

Relationship Counselling in Sunderland
People get in touch when the distance has stopped feeling temporary, or when trust has been broken and every attempt to discuss it turns into the same row. Anxiety feeds a lot of it. In Sunderland, 25.8% of adults reported a high anxiety score in 2022/23, above the England average of 23.8%, and anxiety that high changes how two people treat each other: more checking, more irritation, less patience with anything that is not urgent. The work is to slow the exchange down enough that each of you hears the other, and to look at what is being protected by the silence. Coming without your partner is entirely acceptable here. Anyone in England can self-refer through the NHS Talking Therapies finder for free individual help, Sunderland Mind runs local support, and Wear Recovery is the free confidential drug and alcohol service if drinking has become part of what you argue about.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.
Book a free 15-minute callMy online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Sunderland, you can refer yourself directly to NHS talking therapies for anxiety and depression, with no GP referral needed. You can find support through the NHS Talking Therapies finder.
Private sessions with me usually mean you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout; I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.
Sunderland questions
Yes, and it is one of the reasons this is done online. The hour can sit wherever the two patterns overlap, including early mornings or before a night shift, and there is no travel eating into either end. Some weeks only one of you makes it, which is fine.
It is charged per session, not per person: £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for 120. Ninety minutes usually suits couples better because two accounts of the same week take time. The 15-minute conversation that starts the whole thing off is free of charge.
In England you can self-refer through the NHS Talking Therapies finder without a GP appointment, at no cost. It works with individuals rather than couples, so it is the right route if one of you is struggling personally, and it runs perfectly happily alongside relationship work.
It sits oddly at first and then usually not at all. Getting on with things has kept this city going through a great deal, and it is also why couples here often leave it very late. Talking is not the opposite of coping; it is a different tool.
It is part of the right place. Wear Recovery is free and confidential and deals with the drinking directly. What comes to relationship work is everything built around it, the apologies, the wariness, and the way you have both started behaving to avoid the next one.
Yes. Everything is online from Hove, so we can find a time that works around rotas rather than office hours, and shifting a video session when a shift changes is straightforward. You both join from home when the timing works.
Usually within a week or two of a free 15-minute consultation. I work from Hove and see Sunderland couples securely online, from Roker to Washington, so there is no waiting list and no room or parking to organise together in the city.
Couples usually choose 90 minutes at £100, or 60 minutes at £80. Relate and NHS services in Sunderland can cost less but often carry a wait, whereas private online work lets us begin sooner and hold a steady weekly time for you both.
That coping streak is common in Sunderland, and quietly starting online can feel easier than a waiting room. Because we meet by video we can work together or from two places, and I keep some evening slots so sessions fit around shift patterns.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.

People who come for relationship counselling in Sunderland often also look at counselling and therapy, trauma counselling and addiction counselling.
There is more on this in my writing: the Imago dialogue for couples.
If you can reach the south coast, this work is also done face to face in Hove, where the room is — all in-person areas are listed here.
