Life in Newcastle upon Tyne

Why do people in Newcastle upon Tyne reach out?

Newcastle is famously warm and famously good company, and that is exactly what makes it hard to say out loud that your marriage has gone quiet. Everyone is out, everyone is laughing, and you two are the ones who drive home barely speaking. Some of it is work: hospital rotas at the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals, contracts at Newcastle Helix that could end in the spring, hours that never line up. Some of it is older, the regional habit of turning hurt into a joke until neither of you can find the serious conversation any more. A couple in Heaton or Gosforth can look like the life and soul of everything and still not have been honest with each other since last year.

What actually happens in relationship counselling?

Relationship counselling here, for couples or individuals, slows down the pattern you are caught in and builds healthier ways of hearing and being heard.

Rather than say the same thing on every page, the substance lives on relationship counselling in detail, with how I work, sessions and fees for the practical questions and my BACP registration for registration and ethics.

What do I need for an online session?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Work with people across Newcastle is done by secure video, because Bradley is in Hove and there is nowhere here to come to. In a city where you will meet somebody you know on almost any street, that privacy is worth something. You can sit together in the front room in Fenham, or one of you can join from the car after a late finish. Start with a free 15-minute call, then hold a weekly appointment that survives shifts, weekends and everybody else's plans.

Relationship Counselling in Newcastle upon Tyne

Why people in Newcastle upon Tyne come for relationship counselling

The commonest reason people get in touch is that the two of you have stopped talking about anything that matters, and the second commonest is that something has broken trust and neither of you knows what to do next. Both are workable. In Newcastle, 20% of adults reported a high anxiety score in 2022/23, below the England average of 23.8%, though a low figure changes nothing for the person lying awake at three in the morning rehearsing an argument. Sessions go at what happens between you: the moment one of you shuts down, the sarcasm that arrives instead of the hurt, what each of you is actually asking for underneath. Coming alone is entirely normal. NHS Newcastle Talking Therapies takes individual self-referrals for anxiety and low mood, Tyneside and Northumberland Mind runs local support, and if drinking has become part of the trouble between you, Newcastle Treatment and Recovery is free and confidential.

Newcastle upon Tyne questions

Online Relationship Counselling in Newcastle upon Tyne: common questions

We are the couple everyone thinks is fine. Does that make this harder to start?

It usually makes it harder to admit and no harder to do. Keeping up a front costs a lot of energy, and a session is the one hour where you do not have to. Nothing is shared with anybody, in either direction.

What is the cost per session for two of us?

The fee goes by the session, not the head. Sixty minutes is £80, ninety minutes is £100 and a double session is £120. Couples tend to choose ninety so neither person feels rushed. Before any of that there is a free 15-minute conversation to see whether it fits.

Can NHS Newcastle Talking Therapies see us together?

It works with individuals rather than couples, and it is free to self-refer, so it is the right route if one of you needs help with anxiety or depression in your own right. Relationship work runs alongside it well and neither rules the other out.

Drinking is the argument in our house every weekend. Where do we take that?

Two places, ideally. Newcastle Treatment and Recovery is the free service for the drinking itself and the practical support around it. What comes here is everything that has grown up around it between you, the broken assurances, the walking on eggshells, the resentment.

One of us works nights. Is a regular weekly slot realistic?

It is, once the slot is chosen around the pattern rather than against it. Video means no travelling either side, so an hour before a shift or straight after a sleep is workable. Consistency matters more than the time of day.

Our schedules barely meet. When could we both attend?

Because everything is online from Hove, we're not tied to clinic hours, so we can find a slot that catches you both even around awkward shifts or long days. You each join from home in Newcastle when the timing finally works.

How soon can my partner and I start relationship counselling in Newcastle?

Usually within a week or two of a free 15-minute consultation. I work from Hove and see Newcastle couples securely online, from Jesmond to Gosforth, so there is no waiting list and no need to arrange a room or parking together near the Quayside.

What are your couple fees in Newcastle, and is there an NHS route?

Couples usually choose 90 minutes at £100, or 60 minutes at £80. Relate and NHS services in Newcastle can cost less but often carry a wait, whereas private online work lets us begin sooner and hold a steady weekly time that fits you both.

Local pride can make this hard to raise, and one of us works away a lot.

That is very common, and online work can make a first step feel more private. Because we meet by video you can join from home in Newcastle or from two places when one of you is away, and I keep some evening slots for busy weeks.
