Life in Doncaster

Why do people in Doncaster reach out?

Doncaster has been rebuilding itself for a long time. The pits went, the railway works shrank, and families absorbed all of that without a great deal being said about it. In Bentley, Edlington or Armthorpe there are couples holding two jobs between them and a schedule that leaves about forty minutes of shared waking time on a good day. What passes between you in those minutes turns into logistics. Bessacarr and Hexthorpe are different worlds financially, and the same strain turns up in both: a partnership that has quietly become an operation, efficiently run and slightly lonely, where nobody has been unkind and nobody has said anything true for months.

What is relationship counselling, in practice?

Relationship counselling here, for couples or individuals, slows down the pattern you are caught in and builds healthier ways of hearing and being heard.

Because the work itself is the same wherever you live, the detail sits in one place rather than all of them: the full relationship counselling page sets out the methods, how sessions run and what they cost covers the practicalities, and my credentials and registration covers accountability.

How do online sessions actually work?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

There is no room in Doncaster. Bradley works from Hove and sees people here by secure video, which for couples removes the hardest part of arranging anything: being in the same place at the same time after two different days. You can sit together with one laptop, join from two addresses, or one of you can log in from a parked car between shifts. Coming alone is entirely acceptable and often where people start.

Relationship Counselling in Doncaster

Why people in Doncaster come for relationship counselling

Couples arrive at very different stages. Some are early on and frightened by how fast it soured; others have twenty years behind them and a silence that keeps widening. High anxiety was reported by 27.4% of adults here in 2022/23, above the England average of 23.8%, and anxiety at that level does not stay in one person. It becomes a household weather system that both of you live inside and neither of you names. The work begins at the difficult ten minutes, because that is where the pattern shows itself, then moves to what each of you learned to do with need, anger and disappointment long before you met. You do not have to attend as a pair. Where drink has become the third presence in the house, Aspire is the local drug and alcohol service, and the NHS Talking Therapies finder takes self-referrals in England.

My online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Doncaster, you can refer yourself directly to NHS talking therapies for anxiety and depression, with no GP referral needed. You can find support through the NHS Talking Therapies finder.

Private sessions with me usually mean you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout; I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

If you need urgent help now

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.

Doncaster questions

Online Relationship Counselling in Doncaster: common questions

Can I start on my own and bring my partner in later?

That is a common route. We work on your half of the pattern first, which usually shifts more than people expect, and a partner who was hostile at the outset sometimes becomes curious once something changes at home. If they do join later, we begin that as its own separate piece of work.

Do we pay twice as a couple?

No. One fee covers the session however many of you are in it: £80 for an hour, £100 for 90 minutes, £120 for two hours. Couples in Doncaster often take the 90-minute appointment so that neither person ends up talking against the clock. Those opening 15 minutes cost nothing.

Is there anything free locally?

Doncaster Mind runs local mental health support, and in England you can refer yourself straight to NHS Talking Therapies without seeing a GP first. Neither works on the couple specifically. Aspire is the service to contact if alcohol or drugs are part of what is going wrong.

We have children at home. When could we possibly do this?

Evenings after bedtime are the most-used slot, and the fact that nobody travels makes an hour like that possible at all. Some couples use a weekday morning when the house empties instead. Being online means the session fits into a gap rather than requiring an afternoon.

We only ever argue about money. Is that really relationship counselling?

It usually is. Rows about money carry fear, blame and the feeling of having let each other down, and none of that is really about figures. We take the argument apart to see what each of you is defending, then practise having it in a way that does not end where it always ends.

One of us works shifts. When could we both attend?

Because everything is online from Hove, we're not tied to clinic hours, so we can find a slot that catches you both even around awkward rotas. You each join from home in Doncaster, with no journey into the centre, when the timing finally works.

How soon can a couple in Doncaster begin relationship counselling online?

Usually within a week or two of a free 15-minute consultation. I am based in Hove and meet Doncaster couples securely online, from Bentley to Bessacarr, so there is no waiting list and nothing to organise together beyond a private place to talk.

What do you charge couples in Doncaster, and could we use the NHS?

Most couples choose 90 minutes at £100, or 60 minutes at £80. Relate and NHS services in Doncaster can cost less but often involve a wait, while private online work lets us start sooner and keep a dependable weekly time for you both.

Our shifts rarely line up, can evening sessions be arranged?

Yes. Because we meet by video we can join together from home in Doncaster or from two places when one of you is on shift. I keep some evening slots, so a session can sit around your working patterns rather than clashing with them.
