In and around Sunderland
Life in Sunderland
Sunderland was built on shipbuilding, coal and glass, and is now known for car manufacturing, and each of those turns depended on people who did not complain. That inheritance is a strength and a trap. In 2022/23, 25.8% of adults here reported a high anxiety score, above the England average of 23.8%, which fits what people describe rather than contradicting the local reputation for coping. Anxiety attaches to whatever is uncertain: line work at Nissan and the wider automotive sector, agency hours, a tenancy in Millfield or Hendon, a first year at the University of Sunderland. It shows up as a jaw that will not unclench and a mind that starts rehearsing at three in the morning.

Anxiety counselling here is practical and solution-focused: we work on the worry, panic, social anxiety and over-thinking that are actually affecting your day, and on simple ways to settle a nervous system stuck on high alert.
Rather than say the same thing on every page, the substance lives on anxiety counselling in detail, with session lengths and fees for the practical questions and professional standards and registration for registration and ethics.
Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.
There is no room in this city. I work from Hove and we meet by secure video, which for anxiety usually helps more than it costs. Nobody has to know where you are going, because you are not going anywhere. From Fulwell, Ryhope or Washington you need a door that shuts and half an hour. The appointment stays at the same time each week, and that predictability matters, because a shifting diary gives anxiety something extra to work on.

Anxiety Counselling in Sunderland
The trigger for booking is often small and specific: a panic attack in a supermarket, a shift refused, a road avoided for the third week running. Anxiety counselling here is practical, and we start with one episode rather than with your whole history. Trigger, prediction, physical surge, and then the thing you did to make it stop, which is nearly always where the fuel is. Escape works beautifully for ten minutes and teaches the alarm it was right, so we go the other way, in small steps you set, and check honestly what happened. Sleep and shift patterns get proper attention, since neither is a detail. On the NHS side there is no separately branded local service here, so the route is the NHS Talking Therapies finder, which allows self-referral across England with no GP appointment. Sunderland Mind runs support locally.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.
Book a free 15-minute callMy online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Sunderland, you can refer yourself directly to NHS talking therapies for anxiety and depression, with no GP referral needed. You can find support through the NHS Talking Therapies finder.
Private sessions with me usually mean you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout; I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.
Sunderland questions
Through the NHS Talking Therapies finder, which is the self-referral route right across England. There is no separately named local service to look for here, so the national finder is genuinely where to start, and a GP appointment is not required beforehand.
There is a free 15-minute consultation with nothing owed afterwards, so you can hear how I work and ask questions before deciding. Sessions are then £80 / 60 min, with longer appointments at £100 / 90 min and £120 / 120 min if you want them.
Yes, and we plan for it rather than hope. Where the rota is known in advance we book ahead; where it changes, we move the slot. The point is that sessions keep happening steadily, not that they always fall on the same day of the week.
It is by me, and the figures suggest plenty of people locally are carrying it quietly. Getting on with things keeps a household running and does nothing about the alarm going off at three in the morning. Both can be true about the same person.
Talking will not change your contract, and I would not pretend it might. What can change is the endless night-time rehearsing that produces no decisions, the avoidance of letters and calls, and the shame that stops people asking about support they are owed.
It's a common worry, but coping alone with everything is a heavy load, not a strength to prove. Counselling is simply a confidential conversation with someone outside your world. Meeting online, from your own space, can make that first step feel a lot easier.
Usually within a week. After a free 15-minute consultation we book a first session by secure video. I'm based in Hove and work online across Sunderland, so the distance never comes into it; there's no waiting list and no journey across Wearside to arrange.
Sessions are £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for two hours, after a free 15-minute consultation. NHS talking therapies in Sunderland are free but can involve a wait; privately and online, you can usually start sooner and keep one regular time.
Yes. I work from Hove by secure video, not a room in Sunderland, so you join from home in Roker, Washington or wherever's quiet. We can find evening or off-peak slots that fit around car-plant rotas rather than office hours, and move them when needed.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
