Life in Lewes

What brings people in Lewes to counselling?

Lewes looks like a town where life is going well, which makes low mood unusually isolating here. You can walk through Southover on a bright morning surrounded by people who appear entirely fine, and feel further away from them with every step. Depression often starts by quietly removing things: the walk you used to take, the friends you meant to reply to, the interest you had in anything happening locally. Then it uses their absence as evidence. Recorded depression on GP registers across East Sussex stood at 17.4% of patients aged 18 and over in 2024/25, well above the England average of 14.3%, so this is far from a rare experience in this county.

What would we do together in depression counselling?

Depression counselling here is steady and structured: we focus on the low mood, lost motivation and disconnection affecting you now, and on rebuilding the energy, routine and self-worth that hold a day together.

What actually happens in the room is the same everywhere, so it is written up once: see everything on depression counselling for the methods, how I work, sessions and fees for fees and session lengths, and how to check my registration if you want to check who you would be working with.

What does a session actually involve?

Sessions take place in a private, comfortable room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove, held to the strict BACP confidentiality you would expect. We begin with a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, and the same sessions are available by secure video if travelling is difficult or you would simply prefer it.

Sessions can be face to face in Hove, roughly twenty minutes away by car or a short train ride via Brighton, or online by secure video. When motivation has gone, the sensible question is which of those you will still be doing in six weeks. Having somewhere to be at a fixed time each week helps some people considerably. For others the travel is the thing that ends the work, and video is better.

Depression Counselling in Lewes

Why people in Lewes come for depression counselling

Depression responds to structure rather than effort, so that is where we start. We look at what your week actually holds now, honestly, and then rebuild it piece by piece in an order that has a chance of sticking. Sleep first, because so little improves while it is broken. Then daylight and some movement, then contact with other people, then activity that carries meaning for you. Each step is deliberately small, because in low mood the doing comes before the wanting to. Recorded depression on East Sussex GP registers was 17.4% of patients aged 18 and over in 2024/25, against an England average of 14.3%, so the need here is well documented. Health in Mind, the East Sussex NHS Talking Therapies service, takes self-referrals at no cost, and where alcohol has become part of how the evenings pass, STAR - East Sussex Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service is the local service to know about.

Seeing me privately usually means you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout, working at greater depth and pace; the two can run side by side, and I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

Lewes questions

Depression Counselling in Lewes: common questions

Where do Lewes sessions take place, and can I meet online instead?

In a private room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove. From Lewes the office is around twenty minutes by car on the A27, or a short direct train to Brighton and on to Hove. Every service is also available by secure video across the UK, so you can meet from any private space in Lewes or blend the two.

What does starting actually involve?

A free 15-minute phone call first, which is informal rather than an assessment. You say as much as you want, I explain how the sessions work, and you decide afterwards. If you go ahead, a weekly slot is usually available within a fortnight.

How much do sessions cost?

Sixty minutes is £80, with £100 for ninety minutes and £120 for two hours available if wanted. Most people doing depression work come weekly for the hour. There is no charge for the opening 15-minute consultation and no commitment attached to it.

Is Health in Mind worth contacting as well?

It is, and it costs nothing. Health in Mind takes self-referrals for low mood across East Sussex, where recorded depression reached 17.4% of patients aged 18 and over in 2024/25. Waits reflect that, so many people start private sessions in the meantime.

Is counselling any use when I cannot point to a single thing that went wrong?

Yes. Depression frequently arrives without an obvious cause, and hunting for one can turn into another form of self-blame. The work concentrates on what keeps it going now, which is generally more useful than establishing exactly where it began or who is to blame for it.

Everyone here seems settled and busy. Why do I feel so cut off?

Because a close-knit town amplifies the sense of being outside it when you are struggling. Low mood also quietly reduces contact, which then confirms the feeling. We work on rebuilding connection in small steps rather than waiting until you feel sociable again.

Depression makes the trip feel hard, can we work online from Lewes?

Yes. On the harder days we can meet online by secure video from home, and move to my Hove room, around twenty minutes over the Downs, when you feel ready. Either way the support is the same, always at a pace you set.

How do I arrange depression counselling and get to Hove from Lewes?

When motivation is low, I keep booking simple: a free fifteen-minute call, then a first session. Fast, frequent trains reach Brighton in about fifteen minutes, then a couple of stops to Hove, or the A27 takes twenty. If leaving home feels hard, we can begin online.

How much is depression counselling, and how does it compare to NHS support in Lewes?

Sessions are £80 for an hour, £100 for ninety minutes and £120 for two, after a free consultation. Free NHS Talking Therapies for East Sussex accepts self-referrals without a GP, though waits can drain momentum; private sessions mean help with low mood starts straight away.

Can I have depression counselling online from Lewes, or is coming in better, and are evenings available?

Either works for depression. On flat days, video from home spares the journey over the Downs; other weeks, the quick train into Brighton and Hove offers a change of scene. We can alternate, and evening and weekend appointments suit unpredictable energy.
