In and around Kemp Town
Life in Kemp Town
Kemp Town holds several different lives on top of one another. There are the grand fronts of Sussex Square and Lewes Crescent, the flats above the shops on St James's Street, the Bristol Estate, and the constant movement of people working shifts at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Days do not line up here. Someone is always finishing at seven in the morning or starting at eight at night, and a habit slides easily into hours nobody else is awake for. What begins as a way to come down after a heavy shift, or to fill the strange flat time before sleep, can settle into the only fixed feature of an otherwise unpredictable week.

Addiction counselling here treats the pain beneath the habit, not just the symptom, alcohol, drugs, gambling, food or behavioural, so recovery is something you grow into rather than force.
Rather than say the same thing on every page, the substance lives on the main addiction counselling page, with the practical side for the practical questions and professional standards and registration for registration and ethics.
Sessions take place in a private, comfortable room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove, held to the strict BACP confidentiality you would expect. We begin with a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, and the same sessions are available by secure video if travelling is difficult or you would simply prefer it.
The room is fifteen to twenty minutes away, heading west along the seafront through Brighton and into Hove by bus, taxi or car, which is a manageable trip either side of a shift. Appointments are on Western Road and start on time so a tight day still works. Where the rota makes a fixed hour impossible, secure video sessions can be taken from home, and switching format week to week is expected.

Addiction Counselling in Kemp Town
Addiction is used as a wide word in these sessions, and that is deliberate. Alcohol and drugs bring plenty of people in, and so do betting accounts, gaming, spending and porn, particularly where nights are long and solitary. The pattern is the same in each case: something works, then becomes the thing you protect, then quietly starts running the timetable. Sessions begin by taking that seriously rather than treating it as a character flaw, because shame is what keeps most of this hidden and unexamined. Drug-misuse deaths across the city were recorded at 11.1 per 100,000 in 2022 - 24, well above the England average of 5.8 per 100,000. Free structured treatment is reached through the NHS 'find a service' directory, Mind in Brighton and Hove can help with what surrounds it, and the Sussex Mental Healthline covers the small hours.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.
Book a free 15-minute callMy counselling sits alongside the help available locally. You can find your nearest free NHS-funded drug and alcohol service via the NHS “find a service” directory (search “Kemp Town”).
For confidential information and advice, FRANK (on 0300 123 6600) and Drinkline on 0300 123 1110 are free, and Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART Recovery run peer-support meetings you can find online.
Other local and national support verified for this area includes:
This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.
If you drink heavily or use drugs daily, do not stop suddenly on your own. Withdrawal can cause seizures and can be dangerous. Speak to your GP or a local drug and alcohol service first, and they can arrange a safe, medically supported withdrawal. Counselling works alongside that, not instead of it.
Kemp Town questions
In a private room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove. From Kemp Town the room is about fifteen to twenty minutes away, heading west along the seafront through Brighton into Hove by bus, taxi or car. Every service is also available by secure video across the UK, so you can meet from any private space in Kemp Town or blend the two.
It does not. Slots can be arranged around a rota rather than fixed permanently, and a mix of in-person and video appointments usually solves the rest. What matters is regularity over a month, not the same hour every Tuesday without fail.
Yes, and it often causes more damage before anyone notices, since there is nothing to see or smell. Sessions look at what the betting does for you, the debt and secrecy that build around it, and how to bring the whole thing back into view.
Nothing is reported to an employer or a regulator, and no letter goes to your GP without your agreement. Private counselling records are brief and held securely. The narrow confidentiality limits, all concerning serious risk to life, are explained at the outset.
The NHS 'find a service' directory is the way into local structured drug and alcohol treatment, which includes medical care that counselling cannot provide. It costs nothing and needs no referral from me. Many people use it and private sessions together.
There is a free 15-minute consultation to begin with, by phone or video. Sessions then cost £80 / 60 min, £100 / 90 min or £120 / 120 min, paid as you go. Nothing is booked in advance beyond the appointment you have arranged.
About fifteen to twenty minutes heading west along the seafront through Brighton into Hove by bus, taxi or car. If that journey feels like too much, secure video sessions work just as well from home.
Allow fifteen to twenty minutes: the 7 bus runs along St James's Street towards the centre, where you change or take a taxi on to Western Road, and driving follows the seafront the same way. Book a free fifteen-minute consultation first on 07914 681995 or online.
Fees are £80 for sixty minutes, £100 for ninety and £120 for two hours, with a free first call. Kemp Town sits within Brighton and Hove, so you can also self-refer to Pavilions, the free Change Grow Live drug and alcohol service, with no GP referral.
Both work. Kemp Town is a close, familiar community, so some clients prefer the discretion of secure video from home, while others value the trip across town to the Hove room. Evening slots are available, and you can switch between the two as suits you.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
