Substance Use Counselling · Kemp Town
Substance Use Counselling for Kemp Town and the surrounding area, in person or online. Kemp Town, on Brighton's eastern side, runs from St James's Street down to the Marina, with its Regency crescents and village atmosphere. From my room in nearby Hove I offer a calm, confidential space to do this work.

In and around Kemp Town
Life in Kemp Town
Drug use around Kemp Town covers a wide spread of lives. There are people using at weekends around St James's Street, people who take something to get to sleep after a run of nights, and people in flats near Upper Rock Gardens whose evening habit has been steady for years without anyone knowing. Very little of it looks like the version in public health leaflets. What changes over time is not the drug but the reliance: it starts covering more ground, filling more gaps, and becoming harder to picture a week without. Because the area is busy and anonymous, nobody asks. That anonymity protects you and it also leaves the whole thing entirely uninspected.

Substance use counselling here is non-judgemental and one-to-one, working with the pain, fear or loneliness the substance has been managing, at a pace that protects your sense of safety.
The approach does not change with the postcode, so rather than repeat it on every page you can read it in full, the methods and what each session covers, on the substance use counselling page, alongside the practical side and how to check my registration.
Sessions take place in a private, comfortable room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove, held to the strict BACP confidentiality you would expect. We begin with a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, and the same sessions are available by secure video if travelling is difficult or you would simply prefer it.
It is a fifteen to twenty minute run west along the coast to Hove, so an appointment does not need to swallow a whole day off. You are not asked to be clean beforehand and nothing is tested. On weeks where getting across town is unrealistic, or where you would rather stay in, secure video keeps the same hour and the same continuity of work.

Substance Use Counselling in Kemp Town
The focus is drugs, and the stance is straightforwardly non-judgemental about where you are with them now. Cocaine, ketamine, cannabis, stimulants used to stay upright through a shift, or medication taken well past what it was prescribed for: none of it needs dressing up before you can talk about it. Nobody is asked to stop as a condition of being seen. The line of enquiry is what the substance handles for you, since sleep, pressure, physical pain and things that happened long ago are usually somewhere in the answer. Locally, 7.6 adults per 1,000 were in specialist drug-misuse treatment in 2020/21, above the England average of 4.5 per 1,000. That figure suggests a fair number of people nearby have already found their way to some kind of help. The NHS 'find a service' directory covers prescribing and structured care, and these sessions cover the rest.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.
Book a free 15-minute callMy counselling sits alongside the help available locally. You can find your nearest free NHS-funded drug and alcohol service via the NHS “find a service” directory (search “Kemp Town”).
For confidential information and advice, FRANK (on 0300 123 6600) and Drinkline on 0300 123 1110 are free, and Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART Recovery run peer-support meetings you can find online.
Other local and national support verified for this area includes:
This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.
If you drink heavily or use drugs daily, do not stop suddenly on your own. Withdrawal can cause seizures and can be dangerous. Speak to your GP or a local drug and alcohol service first, and they can arrange a safe, medically supported withdrawal. Counselling works alongside that, not instead of it.
Kemp Town questions
In a private room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove. From Kemp Town the room is about fifteen to twenty minutes away, heading west along the seafront through Brighton into Hove by bus, taxi or car. Every service is also available by secure video across the UK, so you can meet from any private space in Kemp Town or blend the two.
Yes, provided you can hold a conversation. Turning up after a heavy night is often more useful than cancelling, because the aftermath is exactly the material the work needs. Nothing is judged and nothing is measured, and the session adapts to how you are.
That comes up regularly in an area with so much shift work, and it is worth untangling carefully. Using something to force sleep or force alertness sets up a cycle that gets steeper over time. Sessions look at that pattern rather than simply naming it as a problem.
No. This is one-to-one work with the same counsellor, and there is no programme to join, no steps to complete and no language you are expected to adopt. If a group appeals to you later, that is your choice and nothing here depends on it.
Assessment, prescribing, testing and structured treatment, all free and reached through the NHS 'find a service' directory. Counselling covers the psychological ground: how the use began, what sustains it and what changes. Running both at once is common and causes no difficulty.
The 15 minutes you spend deciding, at the start, are not charged for. Sessions afterwards are £80 / 60 min, £100 / 90 min and £120 / 120 min, settled individually. Most people begin with the hour, and the longer options are there for weeks when far more has happened.
Yes, and without judgement. We work with the substance in the context of your life and relationships, at your pace, and it can run alongside any medical or community support you already have.
Yes. The seafront route west through Brighton into Hove takes fifteen to twenty minutes by the 7 bus, taxi or car, ending near Western Road. If crossing town feels like too much on a given week, we can meet online instead. Start with a free fifteen-minute call.
Free NHS-commissioned help is available through Pavilions, which covers Kemp Town as part of Brighton and Hove and takes self-referrals. Privately I charge £80 for sixty minutes, £100 for ninety and £120 for two hours after a free call, and both can run together.
Yes. With the Royal Sussex and a close-knit village feel nearby, many Kemp Town clients like the privacy of online video, though the Hove room is a short ride west. Evening appointments are available, and mixing in-person and online is entirely fine.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
