Life in Patcham

What brings people in Patcham to counselling?

Trauma does not always announce itself. In Patcham it might look like someone who drives the A23 daily and cannot explain why one stretch of road makes their hands shake, or a person who has lived near All Saints Church for decades and finds that something from long ago has started arriving uninvited at night. Old Patcham is a settled place, and settled places are good at keeping things private. That privacy can be a real kindness. It can also mean years pass without anyone saying out loud that they still are not sleeping properly, that they take the long way round certain junctions, or that ordinary noise leaves them on edge.

What would we do together in trauma counselling?

Trauma counselling here is gentle and led by you, drawing on methods designed for trauma including the Human Givens Rewind Technique, so a difficult memory is returned to ordinary recall.

What actually happens in the room is the same everywhere, so it is written up once: see the main trauma counselling page for the methods, session lengths and fees for fees and session lengths, and my credentials and registration if you want to check who you would be working with.

Where do we meet, and what happens?

Sessions take place in a private, comfortable room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove, held to the strict BACP confidentiality you would expect. We begin with a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, and the same sessions are available by secure video if travelling is difficult or you would simply prefer it.

This work can happen in the Hove room or online, and you decide which. Patcham is about fifteen minutes away, down the A23 and through the city, so travelling is possible without losing a whole afternoon. Some people want the physical distance from home that a room elsewhere gives them. Others want to stay in their own front room with the door shut and nobody in the house. Neither choice slows anything down.

Trauma Counselling in Patcham

Why people in Patcham come for trauma counselling

Trauma counselling here is paced and led by you, and it does not ask you to retell what happened. That surprises people often enough to be worth saying plainly. Bradley draws on the Human Givens Rewind Technique, which works with the memory while you stay calm and in control, and which can be done without describing the detail out loud. Before any of that, time goes on the present: sleep, startle, the places you have been steering around, and what actually helps you settle. You set the speed throughout and you can stop at any point without explaining yourself. Across Brighton and Hove, emergency hospital admissions for self-harm ran at 161.8 per 100,000 in 2023/24, above the England figure of 117 per 100,000, which gives some idea of how much goes unspoken. For NHS support, the Brighton and Hove Wellbeing Service takes self-referrals and can assess trauma symptoms, while Mind in Brighton and Hove offers local information while you decide.

Finding support in Patcham

My counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Patcham, you can refer yourself directly to the Brighton and Hove Wellbeing Service for free NHS talking therapy, with no GP referral needed.

Seeing me privately usually means you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout, working at greater depth and pace; the two can run side by side, and I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

If you need urgent help now

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.

Patcham questions

Trauma Counselling in Patcham: common questions

Where do Patcham sessions take place, and can I meet online instead?

In a private room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove. From Patcham it is roughly fifteen minutes down the A23 and London Road into the city, then west to the Hove office. Every service is also available by secure video across the UK, so you can meet from any private space in Patcham or blend the two.

Will I be expected to talk through the event itself?

No. The Rewind Technique deliberately does not require you to narrate the event aloud. You say as much or as little as you want to, and you can change your mind partway through. Nobody is going to ask you for detail in order to earn the help you came for.

How much does a longer trauma session cost?

The hour is £80. This work sometimes benefits from more room, so £100 buys ninety minutes and £120 gives two hours, but you are never obliged to book the longer ones. As with everything else, that first 15-minute consultation is free of charge.

Is the Brighton and Hove Wellbeing Service the right NHS route for trauma?

It is the place to start. They take self-referrals, can assess whether their trauma-focused therapies fit, and refer on within the NHS where something more specialist is needed. Working privately alongside an NHS assessment causes no problem at all.

Would travelling to Hove be better than doing this at home?

It depends entirely on your home. If Patcham is where you feel safest, online can be the gentler option. If the house holds difficult associations, or there are always people about, the drive down gives you an hour that belongs to nobody else. Try one and see.

What if something surfaces afterwards and I am back on Carden Avenue alone?

That is planned for rather than left to chance. Sessions end with time to settle and you leave with something practical for the evening. Should a night ever feel unmanageable, the Sussex Mental Healthline answers around the clock, and it can all be picked up the following week.

Do I need to relive the memory for trauma counselling to help?

No. The Rewind Technique I often draw on is calm and non-intrusive, so you do not have to relive or even speak the detail aloud. We work entirely at your pace, in my Hove room or online from Patcham, and you stay in control throughout.

How do I book trauma counselling and travel to Hove from Patcham?

We begin with a free fifteen-minute call, with no need to share detail, then a first session. From Patcham it is about fifteen minutes down the A23 and London Road into the city, then west to Hove. If travelling feels too much, online video is always available.

What are your fees for trauma counselling, and what about NHS trauma support in Patcham?

Private sessions are £80 for an hour, £100 for ninety minutes and £120 for two, after a free consultation. You can self-refer to free NHS Talking Therapies for Brighton & Hove; waits vary, and seeing me privately means gentle, sooner trauma work at a pace you set.

For trauma, in person in Hove or online from Patcham, and can we meet in the evening?

In a close village suburb, some value a room set apart for privacy, while others feel safer on video at home; both suit the gentle Rewind Technique. You lead the pace throughout, and evening and weekend slots keep sessions separate from daily life.
