Life in Peacehaven

What brings people in Peacehaven to counselling?

Telscombe Cliffs and the roads around Centenary Park are quiet in the evenings, and quiet is not always kind. Drug use out here does not have a scene attached to it. There is no district to go to and nobody to bump into, so it happens at home, often alone, often alongside a full working week. Cocaine at weekends that has crept into midweek. Cannabis every night because sleep will not come otherwise. Tablets that started with a prescription and outlived it. From the outside the house looks like every other house on the avenue, which is exactly how it stays for so long.

What would we do together in substance use counselling?

Substance use counselling here is non-judgemental and one-to-one, working with the pain, fear or loneliness the substance has been managing, at a pace that protects your sense of safety.

The method travels; only the geography changes. the full substance use counselling page explains it properly, how I work, sessions and fees answers the practical questions, and qualifications, registration and ethics shows how the practice is held to account.

How do sessions work, in person or online?

Sessions take place in a private, comfortable room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove, held to the strict BACP confidentiality you would expect. We begin with a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, and the same sessions are available by secure video if travelling is difficult or you would simply prefer it.

Getting to the Hove room means the coast road west, twenty to twenty-five minutes on a clear run. That suits some weeks and not others, particularly if your sleep is broken or the mornings are hard. Secure video removes the travel entirely and keeps the appointment intact, and people move between the two formats without losing continuity. Evening slots exist for both.

Substance Use Counselling in Peacehaven

Why people in Peacehaven come for substance use counselling

The starting position here is not judgement. If you are using now, you are welcome now; if you are not sure you want to stop, that uncertainty is material for the work rather than a reason to be turned away. Most people have already tried willpower alone and found it thin, which is a sign the substance is doing a job worth understanding. So we go after the job. What it settles, what it blocks out, what happened before it became daily. Alongside that, the practical damage gets named honestly: money, work, memory, the people you have quietly stopped answering. There is no guidance given here on cutting down or coming off, because that is medical territory. In 2020/21, 3.6 adults per 1,000 in East Sussex were in treatment at specialist drug misuse services, below England's 4.5. East Sussex County Council's drug and alcohol support and the STAR recovery service run by Change Grow Live are the routes for that side of it.

Drug, alcohol & addiction support in Peacehaven

My counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Peacehaven, free local drug and alcohol support is available through East Sussex County Council's drug and alcohol support.

For confidential information and advice, FRANK (on 0300 123 6600) and Drinkline on 0300 123 1110 are free, and Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART Recovery run peer-support meetings you can find online.

Other local and national support verified for this area includes:

If you need urgent help now

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.

If you drink heavily or use drugs daily, do not stop suddenly on your own. Withdrawal can cause seizures and can be dangerous. Speak to your GP or a local drug and alcohol service first, and they can arrange a safe, medically supported withdrawal. Counselling works alongside that, not instead of it.

Peacehaven questions

Substance Use Counselling in Peacehaven: common questions

Where do Peacehaven sessions take place, and can I meet online instead?

In a private room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove. From Peacehaven the coast road runs west through Saltdean and Brighton to the Hove office in around twenty to twenty-five minutes. Every service is also available by secure video across the UK, so you can meet from any private space in Peacehaven or blend the two.

Do I need to be clean before my first appointment?

No, and turning up honest matters more than turning up clean. Coming to a session in the state you are actually in tells us something useful. What is asked is that you are able to take part in the conversation, which most people manage without difficulty.

How much is drug counselling and is there a package?

There is no package and no minimum number of weeks. Sessions are charged as you go: £80 for an hour, £100 for 90 minutes, £120 for two hours. The 15-minute consultation beforehand is free, and stopping is always your decision rather than a negotiation.

Would STAR and counselling clash with each other?

They generally sit well together. STAR, the East Sussex drug and alcohol recovery service delivered by Change Grow Live, handles specialist and medical support, while counselling works on what sits underneath the use. Plenty of people run both at once and tell each side about the other.

Is video as good as sitting in the room in Hove?

For this work it holds up well. What matters is that you can speak freely and not be overheard, which sometimes is easier at home and sometimes is far easier away from it. If the house is crowded, the twenty-odd minutes along the coast buys real privacy.

I use on my own and always have. Where do I even begin?

Begin by describing an ordinary week out loud, which is often the first time the whole shape of it has been said to anyone. Using alone tends to remove the usual checks other people provide, so the first sessions are frequently about restoring an accurate picture.

I do not have much support locally, can counselling fill that gap?

That is often exactly why people reach out. We provide a steady, confidential relationship to work things through, whether online or in person, and I can signpost other local support where it would help.

How do I get from Peacehaven to Hove for substance use counselling?

By car it is twenty to twenty-five minutes west along the coast road through Saltdean and Brighton, with the 12 and 14 buses running the same way and a change for Hove. Start with a free fifteen-minute call on 07914 681995 or through the contact page.

Free or paid for substance use support in Peacehaven?

Both. In East Sussex you can self-refer to Change Grow Live for free substance support with no GP needed. Privately, fees are £80 for sixty minutes, £100 for ninety and £120 for two hours after a free call, and the two can run together.

Do you offer evening or online substance use sessions for Peacehaven?

Yes. Being a fair way out on the clifftops, many Peacehaven clients prefer secure video, which is equally confidential, though the coast drive to Hove is fine. Evening appointments are available, and blending in-person and online works well around a busy week.
