Life in Ditchling
In a village this size, a marriage is partly public property. You walk past the pond and up East End Lane and you are greeted by name four times before you reach the shop. That is one of the lovely things about Ditchling, and it is also why a couple in trouble here often carries it alone for years. There is no anonymous version of your life to retreat into. Whatever is going wrong between you at home gets carefully packed away before either of you steps outside. Friends are shared, and so are the school gate and the church porch, so telling one person can feel like telling everybody. The silence is not coldness. It is the price of a small place you otherwise love.

Relationship counselling here, for couples or individuals, slows down the pattern you are caught in and builds healthier ways of hearing and being heard.
The approach does not change with the postcode, so rather than repeat it on every page you can read it in full, the methods and what each session covers, on the relationship counselling page, alongside how I work, sessions and fees and my BACP registration.
Sessions take place in a private, comfortable room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove, held to the strict BACP confidentiality you would expect. We begin with a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, and the same sessions are available by secure video if travelling is difficult or you would simply prefer it.
The Hove room is about twenty minutes away by car, over or around the hills and into Brighton. Couples sometimes make the drive together and find the trip back the most honest twenty minutes of the week; others prefer to arrive separately. Parking near the room is straightforward. If leaving the village at a set time each week is difficult, or you would rather nobody clocked the pattern, the same appointment runs online by secure video from home.

Relationship Counselling in Ditchling
Couples come from villages like this with problems no different from anywhere else, only more tightly held. A long marriage that has become two lives running in parallel. An old betrayal never properly spoken about, still sitting in the room years later. Drinking that has moved from evening habit to daily arrangement, with one of you managing the other. Or a stretch of depression that has left one partner exhausted and the other guilty about being exhausting. We take the conversations that go wrong and unpick what each of you meant before it turned into what you said. Repair after a breach of trust is treated as something built over months, not declared in an evening. You do not need your partner to come; individual relationship sessions are common and useful. County-wide, GP registers recorded depression in 14.5% of adults aged 18 and over in 2024/25, just over the England figure of 14.3%. NHS West Sussex Talking Therapies takes self-referrals, and the Sussex Mental Healthline is open at any hour.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.

In a private room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove. From Ditchling it is around twenty minutes over or around the Downs into Brighton and on to the Hove office. Every service is also available by secure video across the UK, so you can meet from any private space in Ditchling or blend the two.
The room is twenty minutes away in Hove, which is the point. Nobody local is passing the door. Sessions are confidential and I do not confirm to anyone that you are a client, with the usual exception where there is a serious risk to life, which I would explain at the start.
No referral is needed by anyone. You start with a free 15-minute conversation to see whether it feels workable, and appointments generally begin within a week or two of that. Evening slots exist but fill early, so it is worth mentioning what times actually suit you.
The figures are £80 for sixty minutes, £100 for ninety and £120 for two hours. That is the cost of the session rather than a charge per head, so a couple pays the same as one person. Many pairs pick 90 minutes so that both have room. The first 15 minutes are free.
NHS West Sussex Talking Therapies covers this area and you can refer yourself online rather than waiting for a GP appointment. It works largely with individuals on anxiety and low mood, and there is often a wait. DAWN handles drug and alcohol support across West Sussex if that is relevant.
Yes, and it is a real piece of work rather than a consolation prize. We look at your part in the pattern, what you keep hoping he will notice, and what changes when you stop waiting. People often report that something shifts at home even though only one of them attended.
That is exactly why many village couples value a room set apart. Central Hove is around twenty minutes over the Downs, well away from the village crossroads and pond, and you arrive straight to your appointment. If you would rather not travel, online sessions keep it entirely private.

Yes. Couples can come to the Hove room or share a secure video call from home, which suits Ditchling's village closeness when privacy matters. Individuals are welcome alone. Evening slots are available, and you can mix the drive over the Downs with online sessions to suit your week.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
