Life in Cardiff

What brings people in Cardiff to counselling?

Cardiff can be a hard place to be quietly unhappy with somebody. The city looks busy and successful from the outside: the bay, the crowds moving towards the Principality Stadium on a match day, everybody apparently out enjoying themselves. Meanwhile you are in a flat in Roath or a terrace in Canton having the same tense conversation for the fourth time this month. Rent takes a large bite, so leaving is not simply a matter of deciding to. Long office hours and shift patterns mean the two of you can go days exchanging little beyond messages about who is collecting what. Splott and Cyncoed are different worlds financially, and the same strain turns up in both.

What actually happens in relationship counselling?

Relationship counselling here, for couples or individuals, slows down the pattern you are caught in and builds healthier ways of hearing and being heard.

Rather than say the same thing on every page, the substance lives on the full relationship counselling page, with session lengths and fees for the practical questions and professional standards and registration for registration and ethics.

How does meeting by video work in practice?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Cardiff is covered online rather than in person, because Bradley works from a single room in Hove. For couples in the capital that turns out to be practical. Neither of you has to cross the city at rush hour to reach an appointment, and you can join from separate places when one is still at work. If you share a house, headphones and a shut door are usually enough. You are also free to come without your partner.

Relationship Counselling in Cardiff

Why people in Cardiff come for relationship counselling

People come to relationship counselling in Cardiff at very different stages. Some are three months into something that already feels wrong and want to understand why. Others have twenty years behind them and a silence that keeps growing. A capital city puts its own pressure on a couple: long hours, a housing market that keeps you in a flat you have both outgrown, and social lives pulling in opposite directions. The work starts with what actually happens between you in the difficult ten minutes, because that is where the pattern lives. From there we look at what each of you learned to do with anger, need and disappointment long before you ever met. If drinking or a mood that will not lift has become a third presence in the house, we address it rather than tiptoeing round it. NHS support in Wales begins with your GP, and Cardiff Mind is a local option alongside.

Finding support in Cardiff

My online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Cardiff, you can access NHS psychological therapies through your GP or local primary mental health support service. You can find support through the CALL Mental Health Helpline for Wales, free and confidential on 0800 132 737.

Private sessions with me usually mean you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout; I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

If you need urgent help now

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and press 2 for urgent mental health support. The CALL Helpline for Wales is free on 0800 132 737, the Samaritans are on 116 123, and you can text SHOUT to 85258.

Cardiff questions

Online Relationship Counselling in Cardiff: common questions

We share a house in Cathays. Where would I take a session from?

Most people use their bedroom with headphones, which is more private than it sounds, since only your side of the conversation is audible. A car works too. If a housemate is always in, we can look for an hour when the house is at its emptiest and keep that slot.

What do you charge, and is a couple charged twice?

No, the fee is per session and not per person. Sixty minutes costs £80, ninety minutes costs £100 and two hours costs £120. Couples frequently take the 90-minute slot so that both of you get proper airtime. Nothing is payable for the 15-minute consultation at the start.

Is there anything on the NHS in Cardiff for couples?

Provision for relationship difficulties is limited, and in Wales the way in is your GP rather than an online self-referral. Your surgery can point you towards the local primary mental health support service. Cardiff Mind runs in the city, and CALL answers free on 0800 132 737.

Can we come if one of us is not certain they want to save it?

You can, and it is more common than you would think. The purpose then is not to force a decision but to make sure it is an honest one, arrived at with both sides properly heard. Sometimes that work saves the relationship; sometimes it makes a parting less bitter.

One of us works nights in the city. Are daytime appointments possible?

They are. Mornings and early afternoons are available, which fits a night worker far better than the usual evening slot. If your partner is on days, we can find an overlap, or you can attend separately at times that suit each of you and still work on the same thing.

Can my partner and I both join from home in Cardiff?

Yes. Sessions are held by secure video, so you can both sit together in one room, or join from two different places if work or travel keeps you apart. Wherever you are in the capital, the appointment reaches you without a journey.

How soon can my partner and I start relationship counselling in Cardiff?

Usually within a week or two. I work with couples across Cardiff by secure video rather than in person, so there is no local waiting list to join. We can begin with a free 15-minute consultation, then arrange your first full session at a time that suits you both.

What do you charge for couples work, and how does that compare with NHS Wales?

My fee is £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 minutes or £120 for two hours, with a free 15-minute consultation first. NHS Wales relationship support through Cardiff and Vale can involve a wait, so many couples value being able to start privately and promptly online.

Can we attend couples sessions from different places, since we both work in the city?

Yes. Because sessions run by secure video, the two of you can join from one room or from separate locations if work or travel keeps you apart. I can also offer evening appointments, which helps couples fitting counselling around busy jobs around Cardiff Bay and the centre.
