Life in Birmingham

Why people in Birmingham get in touch

Birmingham is large enough that two people can share a house and barely overlap. One of you comes back from a late finish at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham; the other has been at a desk on Colmore Row since before seven. Crossing this city costs the best part of an hour either way, so the evening you meant to spend together turns into a handover at the front door. Couples in Erdington and Kings Heath put it in different words but describe one thing: a household that runs, bills that get paid, and no real conversation since the spring. In a shared or multigenerational home in Handsworth or Bournville there may also be nowhere private to have one.

What does relationship counselling involve?

Relationship counselling here, for couples or individuals, slows down the pattern you are caught in and builds healthier ways of hearing and being heard.

The method travels; only the geography changes. the relationship counselling page explains it properly, session lengths and fees answers the practical questions, and my BACP registration shows how the practice is held to account.

How do online sessions actually work?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

There is no room in Birmingham. Bradley works from Hove, so relationship sessions run by secure video, which takes out the cross-city journey that stops most couples ever booking. You can share one screen at the kitchen table, or log in from two places when one of you is still at work. Ninety minutes suits two voices better than sixty does. Coming on your own is entirely allowed, and your partner does not have to agree to anything first.

Relationship Counselling in Birmingham

Why people in Birmingham come for relationship counselling

Most couples here do not arrive after one disaster. They arrive because the same argument keeps restarting from a different room, or because one of them has quietly rearranged the whole household around the other's drinking, or because closeness left and nobody can date it. Money and mismatched shifts do a great deal of the damage in a city where work is spread this far apart. So does low mood. In Birmingham, 22.3% of adults reported a high anxiety score in 2022/23, slightly below the England average of 23.8%, which says this is ordinary rather than mild. The work itself is slow and fairly practical. We take one recurring exchange apart until each of you can hear the request buried inside it, look squarely at where trust was damaged, and test what repair would mean on a Tuesday. Birmingham Healthy Minds takes self-referrals, and Change Grow Live Birmingham is there when drink or drugs is part of what sits between you.

Birmingham questions

Online Relationship Counselling in Birmingham: common questions

How soon could the two of us start, and is there a wait?

You start with a free 15-minute call, which is a conversation and not an assessment. Weekly appointments normally get going a week or two after that. No referral form, no waiting list. If the only workable slot falls after a night shift or a long day in the city centre, say so on that call.

Do we pay two fees if both of us attend?

No. The fee covers the appointment rather than the number of people sitting in it. An hour is £80, ninety minutes £100, and the two-hour session £120. Two people usually need the longer slot to both be properly heard. The opening 15-minute consultation costs nothing either way.

Is there an NHS option in Birmingham for relationship difficulties?

Birmingham Healthy Minds is the city's NHS Talking Therapies service and you can refer yourself to it without seeing a GP first. It is built around anxiety and depression rather than couples work, so it may help one of you individually while the relationship work happens elsewhere. Waits move about.

Can the two of us log in from two different addresses?

Yes. Some couples sit at one laptop; others log in separately, one from home in Moseley and one from a desk in the Jewellery Quarter. Two connections often feel less confrontational than sitting shoulder to shoulder. Agree beforehand who gets the quiet space, because being overheard is the usual snag.

My partner drinks and refuses to come. Is it worth starting alone?

Usually it is. When one person changes how they answer, the pattern between you has to move as well. Nobody will steer you towards leaving or staying, because that decision stays yours. For the drinking itself, Change Grow Live Birmingham runs the city's drug and alcohol service alongside whatever we do.

Can we join together as a couple from home?

Yes. Because sessions are online, you and your partner can join together from a private room at home anywhere in Birmingham, with no journey into the centre. If your partner cannot attend, you are also welcome to come on your own to work on the relationship.

How soon can we start online relationship counselling in Birmingham?

There is no waiting list for online relationship counselling in Birmingham. We start with a free 15-minute consultation, and once you and your partner have settled on a regular time, weekly sessions can usually begin soon after. Whether you live in Moseley, Edgbaston or Sutton Coldfield, everything is arranged by video.

What does relationship counselling cost in Birmingham, and is it available on the NHS?

Birmingham has NHS Talking Therapies you can self-refer to for free, though they often carry a wait. Private sessions with me are £80 for 60 minutes, 100 for 90 and 120 for two hours, after a free 15-minute chat. Many couples use private work to start sooner.

Can my partner and I join from different places in Birmingham, and are evening sessions available?

Yes, partners do not need to be in the same room. One of you could join from home in Kings Heath while the other logs in from work near Colmore Row, and evening slots outside the nine-to-five are often available, which suits shift patterns at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
