Life in Swansea

What brings people in Swansea to counselling?

The bay is still there in February. That is part of what makes depression so confusing in Swansea. You can live ten minutes from the Gower coastline and not have looked at it properly since the autumn, and then feel a fresh layer of guilt about that. The city holds a large student population and a lot of people who came for a course and stayed, which means plenty of households without family nearby. It also holds real hardship. In Townhill, Landore or Bonymaen there are people who get everything done that has to be done and feel flat and far away throughout the whole of it.

What would we do together in depression counselling?

Depression counselling here is steady and structured: we focus on the low mood, lost motivation and disconnection affecting you now, and on rebuilding the energy, routine and self-worth that hold a day together.

Rather than say the same thing on every page, the substance lives on the main depression counselling page, with how sessions run and what they cost for the practical questions and how to check my registration for registration and ethics.

How do online sessions actually work?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

All of this runs online over secure video, because there is no room in Swansea and Bradley works from Hove. On a low day the journey is often the thing that makes the difference between attending and cancelling, and here there is no journey. Nobody has to be greeted, nothing has to be tidied and you do not have to look well. The weekly hour holds its place regardless of how the rest of the week went.

Depression Counselling in Swansea

Why people in Swansea come for depression counselling

Depression is not really about mood at all. It is about capacity. Things that used to take no effort start taking all of it, and one by one they stop happening: the cooking, the replies, the walk, the friend you meant to ring back in November. In a city where other people appear to be out enjoying themselves, that withdrawal comes wrapped in shame, and shame keeps it going. Swansea's ONS anxiety rating was measured at 3.46 out of 10 for the year ending March 2023, above the Wales average of 3.3. The counselling is deliberately structured. We start with a clear look at how a week is actually being spent, then rebuild it in pieces small enough to be done badly on a bad day, because activity restores energy rather than the reverse. The self-critical commentary gets examined too. For NHS support, a GP refers you into the local primary mental health support service, and Swansea Mind works across the city.

Private sessions with me usually mean you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout; I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

If you need urgent help now

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and press 2 for urgent mental health support. The CALL Helpline for Wales is free on 0800 132 737, the Samaritans are on 116 123, and you can text SHOUT to 85258.

Swansea questions

Online Depression Counselling in Swansea: common questions

Can I be seen soon, or is there a queue?

There is no queue. A free 15-minute consultation is usually available within days, and weekly sessions tend to begin a week or so afterwards. If making a phone call feels like more than you can do at the moment, email is a perfectly good alternative.

What will it cost?

Counselling is £80 an hour. Longer appointments are available, at £100 for 90 minutes and £120 for two, though for this work weekly hours are the usual pattern. The first 15-minute conversation is free and is genuinely just a conversation.

Do I need to go through my GP?

Not to see me, no. It is still often worth doing, since in Wales the GP is the way into NHS support and holds the referral to the local primary mental health support service, and can also check whether anything physical is adding to the exhaustion.

I moved here for university and stopped going to lectures. Is that depression?

It might well be. Withdrawal from things that used to be automatic is one of the clearest signs, and it happens to a lot of students away from home for the first time. We work on the reasons for stopping, then rebuild attendance gradually.

The sea is right there and I still feel nothing. What does that mean?

It means the depression is affecting your ability to take pleasure in things, which is a symptom rather than ingratitude. It is one of the most demoralising parts. It also tends to be one of the earlier things to return once the work gets going.

Are you actually based in Swansea?

No, my practice is in Hove, on the Sussex coast. I work with people throughout Swansea and the Gower by secure video rather than face to face, which removes the journey and, for low mood especially, can make starting feel far more manageable.

How quickly can I start online depression counselling in Swansea?

Usually within a week. We begin with a free 15-minute consultation, then book your first full session at a time that works. Because everything is by secure video from Hove, low mood need not be made harder by a journey into Swansea or out from Gower.

How do depression counselling fees compare with local NHS in Swansea?

Swansea Bay University Health Board offers free NHS Wales support, but there can be a wait. My sessions are £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for two hours, with a free 15-minute consultation first, so you can start without a GP referral when energy is low.

Is online depression counselling in Swansea available outside working hours?

Yes, some evening appointments can be arranged by secure video. When getting out feels like too much, joining from your own front room in Morriston or Mumbles is often more manageable than travelling. We keep a steady weekly time so the work stays consistent even on harder days.
