Life in Derby

What brings people in Derby to counselling?

Low mood in Derby often gets described as being worn out. Long shifts, a long record of turning up, a house in Chaddesden or Spondon and no obvious reason to feel this way. Recorded depression on GP registers stood at 13.6% of patients aged 18 and over in 2024/25, a little under the England average of 14.3%, and in an engineering city full of people used to fixing things, booking in about your own mood is not the first instinct anybody has. The pattern itself is familiar enough. Interest goes first, then energy, then the small routines that were holding a week together. You still turn up for work. You simply stop being present in it.

What would we do together in depression counselling?

Depression counselling here is steady and structured: we focus on the low mood, lost motivation and disconnection affecting you now, and on rebuilding the energy, routine and self-worth that hold a day together.

Because the work itself is the same wherever you live, the detail sits in one place rather than all of them: everything on depression counselling sets out the methods, how I work covers the practicalities, and qualifications, registration and ethics covers accountability.

What do I need for an online session?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

This is online counselling by secure video. There is no Derby room, since Bradley sees people from Hove, and with depression that removes a genuine obstacle rather than creating one. The effort of getting washed, dressed and across town is frequently the exact thing that defeats an appointment. Sitting down at your own kitchen table costs very little by comparison, and it means a session can still happen in a week when you have barely been outside.

Depression Counselling in Derby

Why people in Derby come for depression counselling

Depression counselling is steady, structured and deliberately unhurried. We usually open with the flat facts of your week rather than your feelings about them: hours slept, meals eaten, conversations had, and the things you once bothered with that have quietly gone. After that it becomes a rebuilding job carried out in very small parts, because motivation is a result of activity and not a prerequisite for it. That reversal is the piece most people have never been told, and it changes what you are aiming at. We also give proper weight to whatever is genuinely heavy, since restructuring, insecure hours and money that will not reach the end of a month are facts rather than faulty thinking. Derby and Derbyshire Talking Therapies takes self-referrals directly. Your GP is worth a conversation where sleep or appetite has altered markedly, and many people keep a private hour running throughout so one relationship never restarts.

Derby questions

Online Depression Counselling in Derby: common questions

I have not told anyone at work. Does anybody there need to know?

No. Nothing goes to an employer, and because everything is online there is no appointment card, no local address and nothing for anyone to notice. Involving occupational health, if you ever want to, is a wholly separate decision and one that stays with you.

Is Derby and Derbyshire Talking Therapies worth approaching at the same time?

Frequently it is. Self-referral means you can go to them yourself rather than waiting on a GP appointment first. The two do different jobs: a defined NHS course with a clear structure, and a private hour that carries on regardless of where you sit on any list.

What if I can only afford this occasionally rather than weekly?

That is workable. Fees are £80 / 60 min, £100 / 90 min and £120 / 120 min, and a fortnightly rhythm suits some people better than a weekly one, for pace as much as cost. The 15-minute consultation is free, and we can agree something you can actually sustain.

Since my shift pattern changed I have stopped seeing anyone outside work. Where does that even start?

With something considerably smaller than you would expect. Rebuilding contact begins with one short, low-stakes thing at a fixed time, not a resolution to be sociable again. We choose it together, you try it, and we look honestly at what happened rather than at whether you fancied it.

Does this work if I have gone flat rather than sad and cannot really describe it?

It does. Plenty of people arrive with no vocabulary for it beyond feeling switched off, and the description gets built up gradually rather than demanded at the door. Nothing has to be named correctly before we begin. We work from the shape of your week instead.

Could this just be burnout from the job?

It might be, and counselling can help you tell the difference. Talking things through with someone outside your workplace can clarify whether what you are feeling is exhaustion, low mood or both, and what changes or support might genuinely help.

Can I quickly begin online depression counselling in Derby?

Yes. With Derby served online, there is no journey to fit around a rota and no waiting room, so making a start is easy. A free 15-minute consultation lets you see whether it feels right, and we then agree a regular weekly time.

What does depression counselling cost, and is NHS help available in Derby?

Sessions are private: £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for two hours, with a free 15-minute consultation to begin. NHS support is available too, through self-referral to Talking Therapies via a Derby GP, though the wait differs from booking privately.

Is online as good as face-to-face for depression, and are evenings possible in Derby?

Video suits depression well and spares a low-energy drive across the city. The room is in Hove, so Derby is online only. Evening and early appointments can often be arranged, which helps people working changing shifts at the big plants.
