In and around Darlington
Life in Darlington
Low mood in a town this size can be very well hidden. Darlington is close-knit enough that people manage appearances, and far enough from the bigger cities that a bad stretch can pass unremarked for months. Recorded depression on GP registers stood at 16.7% of adults in 2024/25, well above the England average of 14.3%, one of the higher figures in this part of the country. What it looks like day to day is narrowing. You stop going to things at Head of Steam or into town on a Saturday. The house gets untidy in a way that is not like you. Firthmoor, Branksome or Harrowgate Hill, it makes the same shape: less contact, less movement, more effort for less.

Depression counselling here is steady and structured: we focus on the low mood, lost motivation and disconnection affecting you now, and on rebuilding the energy, routine and self-worth that hold a day together.
Because the work itself is the same wherever you live, the detail sits in one place rather than all of them: the full depression counselling page sets out the methods, how I work, sessions and fees covers the practicalities, and qualifications, registration and ethics covers accountability.
Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.
Because everything runs online, a flat morning does not cost you the appointment. There is no Darlington venue - my base is Hove - and on the days when the walk to a bus stop would have been the thing that stopped you, it simply is not part of the arrangement. We keep one regular hour so there is a fixed point in the week, and we can drop to fortnightly once you are steadier without losing the thread.

Depression Counselling in Darlington
Depression counselling here is deliberately structured, because low mood dismantles structure faster than anything else. Early on we look honestly at the shape of your week: sleep times, meals, daylight, movement, whether you speak to another person. Then we rebuild one piece at a time, at a size you can genuinely manage on a bad day rather than a good one. The order matters. Doing comes before feeling like it, which is the opposite of what depression tells you. Alongside that, we look at what the mood grew out of - redundancy, a bereavement, caring for a parent, a marriage that emptied out quietly. Durham and Darlington Talking Therapies is your NHS option and it accepts self-referrals without a GP letter, and Darlington Mind provides local support. Running an NHS course and this together is common and causes no problem at either end.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.

Darlington questions
Durham and Darlington Talking Therapies covers it, and no, you can refer yourself without seeing a GP first. It is worth doing that early because waits vary. A GP visit is still the right step if you want to talk about medication or if your physical health has slipped too.
That is precisely what it is for. Lost motivation is a symptom, not a decision, and the work is built around that fact. We start at a size that does not require willpower you have not got, and let the sense of wanting to return afterwards rather than waiting for it beforehand.
Sessions are £80 / 60 min, £100 / 90 min and £120 / 120 min, with a free 15-minute consultation before you commit to anything. You pay per session, so you can stop at any point without notice or explanation. Most depression work begins weekly and moves to fortnightly.
It works, with one caveat we address directly. Sessions reaching you at home removes the barrier that would have prevented you starting, but getting outside stays part of the plan rather than being quietly dropped. We build it back in gradually and at your pace.
For a lot of people it does, and it is worth naming rather than treating as an excuse. Reduced daylight, fewer reasons to go out and a shrinking social week compound low mood. We plan around it deliberately, protecting daylight and contact through the months that take the most out of you.
Getting on alone often keeps low mood in place rather than shifting it. Counselling gives the heaviness somewhere to go and someone to think it through with, no brave face required. Meeting online lowers the bar to starting, with no trip out of town to manage.
Often within a week of your free 15-minute call. When you're low, avoiding a trip into town to an appointment helps; you join by secure video from home in Cockerton or Haughton. I work from Hove across Darlington and we'd hold one regular weekly time.
NHS talking therapies in Darlington are free and worth using; the usual trade-off is a wait and less flexibility. I charge £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for two hours, after a free consultation, and can usually start sooner with a consistent slot.
Online suits many people. On low days, avoiding a journey into town makes attending far easier. I'm in Hove, not Darlington, and can offer evening times, so a session fits around work and family without adding to an already heavy day.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.

If depression counselling is not quite what you are looking for, anxiety counselling, counselling and therapy and psychotherapy may fit better in Darlington.
There is more on this in my writing: a solution-focused exercise and small repeated steps.
If you can reach the south coast, this work is also done face to face in Hove, where the room is — all in-person areas are listed here.
