Life in Cambridge

What is going on for people in Cambridge?

Depression in Cambridge often disguises itself as underperformance. The days keep their shape, because a timetable is imposed from outside, and yet nothing in them registers. Reading one paragraph six times. Missing supervisions. Doing the minimum and calling it laziness. Recorded depression on GP registers stood at 12.5% of patients aged 18+ in 2024/25, below the England average of 14.3%, which is unsurprising in a young and highly mobile population that tends to move on before much gets recorded. Terms end, cohorts scatter, and the friendships holding you up in Newnham or Chesterton turn out to have carried a fixed end date all along.

What does depression counselling involve?

Depression counselling here is steady and structured: we focus on the low mood, lost motivation and disconnection affecting you now, and on rebuilding the energy, routine and self-worth that hold a day together.

The method travels; only the geography changes. the depression counselling page explains it properly, the practical side answers the practical questions, and my BACP registration shows how the practice is held to account.

What do I need for an online session?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Everything happens online by secure video, since Bradley works from Hove and there is no room in this city. When low mood has flattened a week, that matters practically. No cycle across town in the rain, no reception to sit in, no explanation owed to anybody about where you are going. It also means the work continues if you move away, finish a course, or spend months somewhere else, which in a place this transient is hardly a minor consideration.

Depression Counselling in Cambridge

Why people in Cambridge come for depression counselling

Depression counselling is patient, structured and fairly ordinary in its methods. We begin by describing a week accurately rather than judging it: when the day starts, whether food happens, how much of the flat you have actually left, and which parts of life have gone quiet. Then things are reintroduced in pieces small enough to survive a bad morning, because waiting for motivation to return first is how a low patch turns into a long one. Alongside that we take seriously the parts which are not in your head at all, such as rent swallowing most of an income, insecure contracts, and a supervisor you cannot talk to. NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Talking Therapies accepts self-referral for low mood, and CPSL Mind provides support across Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and South Lincolnshire meanwhile.

Cambridge questions

Online Depression Counselling in Cambridge: common questions

I am still handing work in on time, so how could this be depression?

Functioning and feeling are not the same measurement. A great many people keep delivering right up to the point where they stop altogether, and the effort of maintaining that is invisible from outside. What you manage to produce is not evidence about what producing it is costing.

Recorded depression here is 12.5%, under the England average. Does that match what you see?

Possibly not. The 2024/25 GP register figure sits below the England average of 14.3%, and registers only hold people who saw a doctor and had it written down. A city where much of the population arrives, studies and leaves will record less than it actually contains.

How do I get NHS help for low mood in Cambridge?

NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Talking Therapies is the local NHS Talking Therapies service, and in England you refer yourself without a GP letter first. If you are here on a course, doing it early in term rather than late is worth it, because waits do not shorten for deadlines.

Can I pay for single sessions rather than booking a course of them?

Yes, sessions are paid for one at a time. An hour comes to £80, ninety minutes to £100 and two hours to £120, with no package to sign up to. Where low mood is concerned, committing week by week is often more realistic. The 15-minute consultation is free.

My mood collapses at the end of every term once everyone leaves. Can we work with a pattern like that?

Yes, and knowing it is coming is a genuine advantage. A predictable dip can be prepared for rather than simply endured, with structure built before the emptying instead of after it. We look at what term time was quietly providing and how to supply some of it another way.

I feel low but everyone around me seems fine. Does that make it harder to seek help?

It can, in a city where achievement is so visible. But low mood is far more common here than the surface suggests. Talking online from home, at a time that suits, lets you be honest about how you really feel without any need to explain or perform.

How quickly can I begin online depression counselling in Cambridge?

Usually without a long wait. Because I work online from Hove rather than a Cambridge consulting room, there is no local list to sit on. A free 15-minute consultation lets us talk first, then we set a start time that fits around term, deadlines or an early train.

Is depression counselling free on the NHS in Cambridge, or should I pay privately?

Both exist. NHS Talking Therapies across Cambridgeshire are free via GP or self-referral, but you have less say over timing and therapist. Working with me privately costs £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90, or £120 for 120, after a free 15-minute chat.

Does online depression counselling work as well as seeing someone in Cambridge?

For many people, yes. Talking from your own space in Trumpington or Arbury can feel easier than walking into somewhere in town, and there is no travel when energy is already low. Evening sessions are available so it fits around work, study or caring for others.
