Life in Hastings

Why do people in Hastings reach out?

There is a particular flatness that arrives in a seaside town in November. The season ends, the work thins, the light goes early, and something in you follows it down without asking permission. You might live in Hollington or Silverhill or Clive Vale and be perfectly functional: getting up, doing the shifts, seeing people. And still the week has lost whatever made it feel like yours. This is a place with real character and real hardship side by side, and it is possible to love living here and be quietly worn out by it. Counselling is the ordinary first step for something like that, and you do not need a diagnosis or a word for it before you start.

What actually happens in counselling and therapy?

Counselling and therapy here is one steady starting point for whatever you are carrying, anxiety, low mood, addiction, relationships or the past, integrative and led by you, so we begin with what matters most and shape the work around you.

What actually happens in the room is the same everywhere, so it is written up once: see everything on counselling and therapy for the methods, how I work for fees and session lengths, and how to check my registration if you want to check who you would be working with.

How does meeting by video work in practice?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Bradley works from Hove, so there is no room in Hastings and the hour happens by secure video. That solves two things at once: the journey, which is not trivial from here, and the visibility, since nobody watches you go into a building in a town where faces are known. All you need is somewhere with a door and an hour without interruption. Daytime slots are usually free in winter and evenings fill up faster.

Counselling and Therapy in Hastings

Why people in Hastings come for counselling and therapy

This is the entry point when you cannot yet put a name to it, and no name is required. The work stays with the present: what is happening now, what it is taking out of you, and what could be different by the spring. Distress here is not rare and it is often invisible until late. Emergency hospital admissions for self-harm in this area ran at 192.7 per 100,000 in 2023/24, well above the England average of 117 per 100,000, and most people in that position had been struggling quietly for a long time beforehand. Counselling is a way of not leaving it that long. The first hour is a stocktake: sleep, drink, money, work, who you can talk to honestly, what changed and when. Somewhere between six and twelve sessions is where most of this work settles. If the cost is what decides it, Health in Mind is the free East Sussex NHS Talking Therapies service and takes self-referrals.

Hastings questions

Online Counselling and Therapy in Hastings: common questions

I do not know what is wrong, only that something is off. Can I book anyway?

Yes, and that is how most people begin. The free 15-minute call is made for it. You say what you have noticed, whether that is the sleep, the drinking or the flatness, and between us we work out whether counselling is a reasonable next step. Nothing is decided on that call.

What are the fees, and can I stop when I have had enough?

You can stop at any point without notice or explanation. Sessions are paid as you have them at £80 for an hour, £100 for ninety minutes or £120 for two hours, and nothing is bought in advance. The introductory 15-minute conversation before you start is free of charge.

Is Health in Mind worth trying before paying for this?

For many people it is. It is the East Sussex NHS Talking Therapies service, it is free, and you refer yourself without a GP appointment. The courses are structured and time-limited, so some people complete one and then bring whatever it could not reach to a private hour afterwards.

Every winter I go under and every spring I come back up. Is counselling any use for that?

It usually is, and starting in the autumn rather than in the depths of February makes a difference. We would look at what the pattern actually consists of, how much is light and money and isolation, and what can be put in place before the town empties for the year.

I have been on a waiting list before and gave up. How long here?

There is no list. Most people have the free call within days and a first session a week or two later. If a previous wait put you off, that is worth mentioning, because the experience of asking for help and being left to wait tends to make asking again considerably harder.

Support here feels hard to come by. Is online counselling reliable?

Yes. Online counselling gives you a consistent, professional space that does not depend on locally stretched services or on travelling out of Hastings. You join privately from home at a regular time, and the work continues steadily whatever the season or the state of local provision.

How quickly can counselling start online for someone in Hastings?

Generally within days. With no waiting list, a free 15-minute consultation is usually followed by a first session that same week. It is held securely online, joined from home near the Stade or up in St Leonards, so distance from larger towns adds no journey at all.

How do your fees sit against the NHS in Hastings?

You pay £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 minutes or £120 for 120 minutes, after a free 15-minute consultation. NHS Talking Therapies is free to self-refer to but can mean waiting, while private counselling with Bradley starts sooner and keeps a consistent weekly time.

The long winters here weigh heavily once the visitors have gone. Can online counselling reach me?

Yes. When the colour of the summer fades and the town quietens, a steady online hour comes to you rather than asking you to travel. Joined from home with evening times available, it offers a confidential place to be heard through the harder, darker months.
