Life in Inverness

What brings people in Inverness to counselling?

Inverness is a small city doing the work of a whole region. People drive in from a long way for everything, and the nearest specialist for anything unusual can be hundreds of miles further south. That has a particular effect on an anxious mind, because the question of what happens if this gets worse never quite has a comfortable answer. Tourism sets the pace of the year, busy and relentless in summer, thin and quiet after. Then the winter dark arrives properly, and the drive home to Culloden or Westhill is done in it. Worry expands in that space. People describe checking things repeatedly, or a heart that races on the way into Raigmore for an ordinary appointment.

What actually happens in anxiety counselling?

Anxiety counselling here is practical and solution-focused: we work on the worry, panic, social anxiety and over-thinking that are actually affecting your day, and on simple ways to settle a nervous system stuck on high alert.

The method travels; only the geography changes. the main anxiety counselling page explains it properly, the practical side answers the practical questions, and how to check my registration shows how the practice is held to account.

How do online sessions actually work?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Bradley is in Hove, so this is online by secure video, which in the Highlands is the difference between having a choice of therapist and having none. There is no drive, no ferry timetable, no hour lost each way, and no weather that can cancel a session. In a place where the same faces turn up everywhere, it also keeps things private: you are not seen going into a building, and nobody local is involved.

Anxiety Counselling in Inverness

Why people in Inverness come for anxiety counselling

Anxiety comes in a few recognisable forms. Panic, which arrives physically and fast. Worry that runs constantly and always finds a subject. Social anxiety, which in a city this size can shrink your world faster than you notice. The work is practical and solution-focused: we start with what your body is doing and why it once made sense, then build ways to settle the alarm that work in the car, in the supermarket and at three in the morning, and then dismantle the avoidance in steps you choose. Drink is often used to take the edge off nerves, and the Highland picture is worth knowing: on National Records of Scotland figures the age-standardised alcohol-specific death rate averaged 22.6 per 100,000 over 2020-2024, slightly above the Scotland average of 21.9. Your GP can refer you into NHS psychological therapies, NHS inform holds trusted self-help, Mikeysline supports people across the Highlands, and Breathing Space is free on 0800 83 85 87.

Inverness questions

Online Anxiety Counselling in Inverness: common questions

Is online really as good as sitting in a room with someone?

For anxiety work the evidence and the experience both say yes. What matters is the relationship and the method, and both travel perfectly well over video. Up here it also means you are not restricted to whoever happens to be practising within driving distance.

What are the fees, and is there anything extra for being remote?

No, there is no distance charge. An hour is £80, ninety minutes £100, two hours £120, wherever you are. The 15-minute consultation at the start is free, and you pay session by session rather than committing to a block in advance.

How do I get NHS help for anxiety in the Highlands?

The route is a GP referral into NHS psychological therapies. Scotland has no self-referral scheme, so start with your practice. NHS inform has trusted self-help, Mikeysline is a Highland charity for mental health, and Breathing Space is free on 0800 83 85 87.

My broadband is not brilliant. Will that ruin the session?

It rarely does. Video is fairly forgiving, and if a picture freezes we can carry on by voice without losing the thread. We agree in advance what to do if a connection drops, so a bad signal is an inconvenience rather than a lost hour.

I am anxious about health and the hospital is my only option here. Does that come up?

It comes up often. When you live a long way from services, health worry tends to fasten onto that distance. We work on settling the physical alarm first, then on how you handle appointments and waiting, which usually makes the whole subject less charged.

I live miles from Inverness, can I really get anxiety counselling from home?

Yes. As long as you have a reasonable connection and somewhere private, secure video reaches you wherever you are in the Highlands. For many that is far easier than a long drive into the city, especially through winter, and the confidential hour is exactly the same.

How soon can anxiety counselling start online in Inverness?

Usually within a week. After a free 15-minute consultation we book a first video session, so there is no waiting and no long drive into the city. You begin from home in Crown, Culloden or a village well beyond Inverness, wherever you have a connection.

What do anxiety sessions cost compared to NHS Highland?

NHS Highland talking therapy is free but covers a vast area where waits and travel are real barriers. My fees are £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for 120, with a free 15-minute consultation, and no drive into the city.

Can I have evening anxiety sessions online across the Highlands from Inverness?

Yes. As long as you have a reasonable connection and somewhere private, secure video reaches you, evenings included, wherever you are around Inverness. That is often far easier than a long drive into the city, especially through the long, dark winter months.
