Life in Lancing

What brings people in Lancing to counselling?

Winter here is long and dark, and low mood tends to arrive with it. The beach empties, the evenings start in the middle of the afternoon, and somebody who was managing in September finds by December that the day has shrunk to almost nothing. Lancing spreads out between North Lancing and the sea, and when energy is low that spread becomes an obstacle in itself: everything needs a car, so nothing gets done. Contact thins out. People describe going days without a proper conversation, then feeling too far behind to explain any of it to friends who have not heard from them.

What would we do together in depression counselling?

Depression counselling here is steady and structured: we focus on the low mood, lost motivation and disconnection affecting you now, and on rebuilding the energy, routine and self-worth that hold a day together.

The approach does not change with the postcode, so rather than repeat it on every page you can read it in full, the methods and what each session covers, on the full depression counselling page, alongside how I work, sessions and fees and my credentials and registration.

What happens in a session?

Sessions take place in a private, comfortable room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove, held to the strict BACP confidentiality you would expect. We begin with a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, and the same sessions are available by secure video if travelling is difficult or you would simply prefer it.

In-person appointments happen in Hove, twenty to twenty-five minutes east along the coast road or a short train ride, and online sessions by secure video are available for the same work. Depression makes distance feel greater than it is, so this is worth planning honestly. A journey gives some people the structure their week has lost. For others it becomes the reason sessions stop, and video is the better choice.

Depression Counselling in Lancing

Why people in Lancing come for depression counselling

The work for low mood is deliberate and unhurried. We begin with the actual shape of your week, including the parts that feel embarrassing to say out loud, and then rebuild it in an order that stands a chance of holding. Sleep and daylight come first, which matters a great deal through a coastal winter. Then movement, then some contact with other people, then whatever used to give a day its point. Steps are chosen for being achievable rather than impressive. Recorded depression on GP registers across West Sussex stood at 14.5% of patients aged 18 and over in 2024/25, above the England average of 14.3%. NHS West Sussex Talking Therapies takes self-referrals, West Sussex Mind offers local support, and DAWN - West Sussex Drug and Alcohol Wellbeing Network is there if drinking has become part of the evenings.

Finding support in Lancing

My counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Lancing, you can refer yourself directly to NHS West Sussex Talking Therapies for free NHS talking therapy, with no GP referral needed.

Seeing me privately usually means you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout, working at greater depth and pace; the two can run side by side, and I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

If you need urgent help now

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.

Lancing questions

Depression Counselling in Lancing: common questions

Where do Lancing sessions take place, and can I meet online instead?

In a private room at Intergen House on Western Road in central Hove. From Lancing it is a twenty to twenty-five minute drive east along the A259, or a short train journey, to reach Hove. Every service is also available by secure video across the UK, so you can meet from any private space in Lancing or blend the two.

How soon could I start?

The free 15-minute call is usually within a few days of you getting in touch, and sessions themselves normally begin inside a fortnight. There is no referral, no assessment and no waiting list. If travelling feels like too much right now, we simply start online.

What will sessions cost?

Weekly hours at £80 are the usual pattern for this work, with £100 for ninety minutes and £120 for two hours if a longer session suits you better. Nothing is charged for the first 15-minute conversation, whatever you decide to do afterwards.

Which NHS service should I approach for depression?

NHS West Sussex Talking Therapies covers this area, is free and accepts self-referrals. Recorded depression on county GP registers reached 14.5% of patients aged 18 and over in 2024/25, which gives some sense of the demand. Working privately while you wait is common.

Is this just the winter, or something more?

Light genuinely affects mood and a dark coastal winter makes things harder. It is rarely the whole explanation though, and putting it all down to the season can leave sleep, isolation and everything else unexamined. We would look at the seasonal pattern alongside the rest.

I have stopped seeing friends and now it feels too awkward to get back in touch. What then?

That gap is one of the most common features of depression and one of the most workable. We look at small, low-stakes ways back rather than a grand reappearance, and at the thinking that says too much time has passed. Most people find the awkwardness is largely their own.

The trip feels hard when I'm low, can we meet online from Lancing?

Yes. Many Lancing clients choose secure video sessions rather than the drive or train, and the work is just as effective from home. When you would rather come in, my Hove room is around twenty to twenty-five minutes east. We can blend the two too.

How do I arrange depression counselling and get to Hove from Lancing?

When motivation is low, I keep booking simple: a free fifteen-minute call, then a first session. Lancing Station runs trains east through Shoreham to Hove, or the A259 takes twenty to twenty-five minutes. If leaving home feels hard, we can begin online instead.

How much is depression counselling, and how does it compare to NHS support in Lancing?

Sessions are £80 for sixty minutes, £100 for ninety and £120 for two hours, after a free consultation. Free NHS Talking Therapies for West Sussex accepts self-referrals without a GP, though waits can drain momentum; private sessions mean help with low mood starts straight away.

Can I have depression counselling online from Lancing, or is coming in better, and are evenings available?

Either works for depression. On flat days, video from home spares the journey; other weeks, the trip east into Hove offers a helpful change of scene. We can alternate, and evening and weekend appointments suit when energy is unpredictable.
