Life in Harrogate

Why do people in Harrogate reach out?

Drug use in Harrogate is largely invisible, and that is not the same as rare. It happens in comfortable houses in Hookstone and Bilton, among people with responsible jobs, and it arrives dressed up as recreation, as performance, or as something to keep going on. Cocaine and a long working week fit together neatly for a while. Prescribed medication follows its own slow curve. What makes it hard here is respectability: there is no local template for being a professional with a drug problem, so people simply do not mention it, and the isolation does the rest. By the time somebody makes contact they have usually been thinking about it privately for a year or more.

What is substance use counselling, in practice?

Substance use counselling here is non-judgemental and one-to-one, working with the pain, fear or loneliness the substance has been managing, at a pace that protects your sense of safety.

Because the work itself is the same wherever you live, the detail sits in one place rather than all of them: the substance use counselling page sets out the methods, how I work, sessions and fees covers the practicalities, and my credentials and registration covers accountability.

How do online sessions actually work?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Because everything runs by secure video from Hove, there is no local door, no waiting area and nobody who might recognise you from a conference or the school gate in Killinghall. That matters more here than in most places. Sessions can sit early, late or in a gap between meetings, and if you have used before we speak, that is simply part of the material rather than a reason to stop.

Substance Use Counselling in Harrogate

Why people in Harrogate come for substance use counselling

This is drug-focused counselling with no requirement that you stop, or want to stop, before starting. One local figure is worth sitting with: only 2.5 adults per 1,000 were in treatment at specialist drug-misuse services in 2020/21, below the England average of 4.5 per 1,000, and deaths from drug misuse ran at 5 per 100,000 across 2022 - 24, below the England average of 5.8. A low treatment rate in an affluent town does not prove there is little use. It often means people are managing privately and never reaching a service at all. North Yorkshire Horizons exists for the structured and medical side, through North Yorkshire Council's drugs and alcohol support. Our work is the other half: what the substance does at the moment you take it, what it replaced, and what would need to exist before it could take less weight.

Drug, alcohol & addiction support in Harrogate

My online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Harrogate, free local drug and alcohol support is available through North Yorkshire Council's drugs and alcohol support.

For confidential information and advice, FRANK (on 0300 123 6600) and Drinkline on 0300 123 1110 are free, and Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART Recovery run peer-support meetings you can find online.

Other local and national support verified for this area includes:

If you need urgent help now

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.

If you drink heavily or use drugs daily, do not stop suddenly on your own. Withdrawal can cause seizures and can be dangerous. Speak to your GP or a local drug and alcohol service first, and they can arrange a safe, medically supported withdrawal. Counselling works alongside that, not instead of it.

Harrogate questions

Online Substance Use Counselling in Harrogate: common questions

I hold down a senior job and use at weekends. Is that a problem?

It might be, and functioning well is not the test. The questions worth asking are whether the amount has crept up, whether the weekend has widened, and whether you could comfortably stop for a month. Capability tends to hide a problem rather than rule it out.

Nobody I know here uses. Does that make me unusual?

It makes you quiet, not unusual. Harrogate has a lower rate of people in specialist treatment than England as a whole, which says as much about who asks for help as about who needs it. Privacy in an affluent town is easy to maintain.

What are the fees, and is anything payable in advance?

Nothing upfront. The initial 15-minute consultation costs nothing at all, and sessions afterwards are £80 / 60 min, £100 / 90 min or £120 / 120 min, settled individually. You are free to stop at any point without notice or explanation.

Would you tell me to go to North Yorkshire Horizons instead?

Not instead, though I might suggest alongside. North Yorkshire Horizons covers structured treatment, testing and prescribing, which I do not do, and North Yorkshire Council's drugs and alcohol support is the way in. Using both together is often the strongest option.

Can I be seen from a hotel while I am working away?

Yes, and it works well as long as the connection holds and you can talk without being overheard. Travel is one of the reasons people choose online work in the first place, since a week away no longer means a fortnight's gap in the middle of things.

Could anyone find out I'm having counselling?

No. Our work is private and confidential, and because it's online there's no clinic to be seen entering or leaving in a town where you might be recognised. You choose a place where you can't be overheard, and nothing is shared without your agreement.

Can I start substance use counselling in Harrogate soon?

Yes. I'm Bradley Riddell, a counsellor based in Hove, and I see people across Harrogate online rather than from a room in the city. We begin with a free 15-minute consultation, then set a regular weekly slot for substance use support, usually starting within a week or two once you feel ready.

Do you offer in-person or evening substance use counselling in Harrogate?

For Harrogate it is online rather than in person, since my room is in Hove on the south coast. Many find secure video suits substance use work well, joining from home in Starbeck or Knaresborough without a commute. I hold some daytime and early-evening slots, so we can usually find a regular time that fits.
