Online counselling for drinking problems for Rotherham, by secure video. In and around Rotherham
Life in Rotherham
In Rotherham the drinking that does the damage is usually done at home. Hospital admissions for alcohol-specific conditions ran at 909.7 per 100,000 in 2023/24 against an England average of 611.7, and the alcohol-specific death rate was 14.6 per 100,000 in 2024 compared with 13.8 nationally. The picture behind that is a settled one: cans in front of the television in Greasbrough because the evening is long, a bottle of wine most nights in Wath that used to be two nights, drinking that started as a reward for finishing a shift and became the reason the shift was bearable at all.

Counselling for drinking problems here looks beneath the habit at what drives it, you do not need to have hit rock bottom to begin, and signposts medical, detox and peer support where useful.
The method travels; only the geography changes. the full counselling for drinking problems page explains it properly, how I work answers the practical questions, and qualifications, registration and ethics shows how the practice is held to account.
Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.
Counselling takes place online by secure video, which removes travel and removes being seen. Bradley works from Hove and there is no room in this town to visit. That matters where a car outside a building gets noticed and remembered. People join from a bedroom in Maltby, a kitchen table in Brinsworth once the house has gone out, or a car parked somewhere ordinary. Sessions are booked one at a time and the first 15-minute conversation is free.

Counselling for Drinking Problems in Rotherham
You are allowed to ask about your drinking while your life still works. Most people who get in touch are employed, paying their way and well thought of, and they assume that disqualifies them from being worried. It does the opposite: it means there is far more still standing to protect. You are also not required to promise you will never drink again. That demand is why so many people wait a decade before saying anything. What we work on is what the alcohol is doing for you: ending the day, flattening anxiety, filling the space where something else used to be. When that job is understood and partly met another way, the drinking loosens without a fight. Rotherham Council's drug and alcohol support and Rotherham Alcohol and Drug Service, provided by With You, offer free local help. Do not stop suddenly if you drink heavily each day; speak to your GP.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.
Book a free 15-minute callMy online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Rotherham, free local drug and alcohol support is available through Rotherham Council's drug and alcohol support.
For confidential information and advice, FRANK (on 0300 123 6600) and Drinkline on 0300 123 1110 are free, and Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART Recovery run peer-support meetings you can find online.
Other local and national support verified for this area includes:
This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.
If you drink heavily or use drugs daily, do not stop suddenly on your own. Withdrawal can cause seizures and can be dangerous. Speak to your GP or a local drug and alcohol service first, and they can arrange a safe, medically supported withdrawal. Counselling works alongside that, not instead of it.
Rotherham questions
Yes. The idea that help is reserved for people in crisis keeps an enormous number of drinkers waiting for a disaster to authorise them. If you are thinking about it often enough to look up counselling, that on its own is a sufficient reason to have the conversation.
Not as a condition of starting. Some people reduce, some change the circumstances in which they drink, and some do eventually stop and find they prefer it. What happens is worked out between us over time rather than settled before the first session.
Rotherham Alcohol and Drug Service, provided by With You, is the free confidential service for the borough and accepts self-referrals for alcohol. Rotherham Council's drug and alcohol support explains the route in. Using it costs nothing and does not prevent you having counselling alongside if you want both.
It means it is shared, which is different. Two people can drink identically and only one of them be relying on it. The question is what it is doing for you specifically, and whether your day is being organised around when the drinking can start.
They can. Early mornings and later evenings are available, and because there is no journey involved a session can sit in a gap that would never be long enough to travel anywhere. A 90-minute slot at £100 also works well for fortnightly appointments.
No. Many people come unsure what they want, and that's a fine place to begin. We start from where you are - whether that's abstinence, cutting down, or just making sense of your drinking - and work out together what change would genuinely help.
Usually fairly soon. Working online means I am not tied to Rotherham clinic hours, so we can find a slot that fits around the steel and advanced manufacturing sector. It starts with a free 15-minute consultation about your drinking, then a regular weekly session once we agree things suit you.
Privately I charge £80 an hour, £100 for 90 minutes and £120 for two hours, with a free 15-minute call first. Rotherham also has NHS routes, through your GP or The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, at no cost; those can involve a wait, so private sessions suit anyone wanting to begin drinking work now.
Sessions with me are online only for Rotherham, as I am based in Hove. People working near the steel and advanced manufacturing sector often prefer this, fitting drinking counselling around the day without travel across the city. I offer daytime and some early-evening appointments, and we would keep the same weekly slot wherever possible.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
Also available online across Yorkshire & North East: Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley. See all of Yorkshire & North East.
If counselling for drinking problems is not quite what you are looking for, addiction counselling, substance use counselling and depression counselling may fit better in Rotherham.
If you would like to read more first, I have written about why practice makes permanent and questioning “once an addict”.
If you can reach the south coast, this work is also done face to face in Hove, where the room is — all in-person areas are listed here.
