Online Counselling for Drinking Problems · Dundee

In and around Dundee
Life in Dundee
Dundee drinks with a sociability that hides a lot. There is the after-work pint in the centre, the student rounds near the University of Dundee, the cans in front of the television in Fintry, and none of it looks remarkable in isolation. What changes quietly is the arithmetic: earlier, more, every night rather than most, and then the mornings begin to cost something. The city's revival has been real but uneven, and for people whose work never got better, drinking is a cheap and available way to end a day. Very few of them would use the word alcoholic about themselves, and they would be right to resist it.

Counselling for drinking problems here looks beneath the habit at what drives it, you do not need to have hit rock bottom to begin, and signposts medical, detox and peer support where useful.
Because the work itself is the same wherever you live, the detail sits in one place rather than all of them: everything on counselling for drinking problems sets out the methods, how sessions run and what they cost covers the practicalities, and how to check my registration covers accountability.
Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.
Everything is online by secure video from Hove, with no Dundee premises, and for drinking that suits the shape of the problem. Evening slots are easy to keep when there is no bus and no walk at the end. You can be at home, where the drinking usually happens, and still be talking honestly about it. A free 15-minute consultation comes first, with no obligation and nothing to sign afterwards.

Counselling for Drinking Problems in Dundee
There is no threshold to cross before you are entitled to bring this. Not a rock bottom, not a diagnosis, not a promise of abstinence. Alcohol-specific deaths in Dundee City averaged 28.2 per 100,000 over 2020-2024, well above the Scotland average of 21.9, and behind every one of those sat years in which somebody was still holding a job down. That is the stage where counselling has most to offer. The work looks at what the drink does for you at the hour you reach for it, what it is standing in for, and what the first hour without it feels like. Sometimes it turns out that sleep, or grief, or a job you hate, is the actual subject. We Are With You provides alcohol support in Dundee and the Dundee Alcohol and Drug Partnership sets out local services. If you drink heavily every day, see your GP before altering anything.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.
Book a free 15-minute callMy online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Dundee, your GP can refer you to local drug and alcohol services, and you can find support through NHS inform's drugs and drug use pages.
For confidential information and advice, FRANK (on 0300 123 6600) and Drinkline on 0300 123 1110 are free, and Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART Recovery run peer-support meetings you can find online.
Other local and national support verified for this area includes:
This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 24 on 111 for urgent mental health support. Breathing Space is free on 0800 83 85 87, the Samaritans are on 116 123, and you can text SHOUT to 85258.
If you drink heavily or use drugs daily, do not stop suddenly on your own. Withdrawal can cause seizures and can be dangerous. Speak to your GP or a local drug and alcohol service first, and they can arrange a safe, medically supported withdrawal. Counselling works alongside that, not instead of it.
Dundee questions
That is a legitimate goal and plenty of people work towards it. Which target fits depends on how much you drink, how long for, and what happens when you go without. Any physical aspect of that belongs with your GP, and counselling handles the reasons and the habits around it.
Fees run at £80 / 60 min, £100 / 90 min and £120 / 120 min in every case. Most people find an hour a week enough to begin with, and there is no requirement to book a set number. If cost is tight, the free 15-minute consultation will tell you whether it is worth the outlay.
We Are With You offers alcohol support across Dundee and accepts self-referrals, and the Dundee Alcohol and Drug Partnership shows how NHS and council provision is organised. Your GP is the referral route into NHS services, and Breathing Space Scotland is free on 0800 83 85 87.
It is better to book for a time when you have not, because the conversation needs you present rather than softened. If it happens, we deal with it honestly instead of cancelling in embarrassment. What we will not do is work through a session where you cannot follow what is being said.
That question is usually the real work rather than an obstacle to it. Losing the ritual matters more than losing the alcohol for many people, so we look at what those evenings actually provide, company, structure, relief, and where else any of it might come from.
Right where you are. It is common for student habits to quietly outlast student life. We start by looking honestly at what drinking does for you now and what it is costing, then work at your pace towards the change you would like to see.
Often within a week. We start with a free 15-minute consultation, then arrange your first secure video session. There is no waiting list and no journey across Dundee, so you can begin from home, from Broughty Ferry to Menzieshill, whenever you feel ready.
Sessions are £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for 120, after a free 15-minute consultation. NHS Tayside alcohol support is free but can mean a wait; paying privately brings a cost yet usually a sooner, more flexible start.
Yes. Secure video lets us meet in the evening from your own home, away from a busy week or campus life. There is no waiting room and no travel across the city, so a confidential hour to talk about your drinking is straightforward to keep.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
Also available online across Scotland: Perth, Aberdeen, Kirkcaldy. See all of Scotland.
