In and around Bristol
Life in Bristol
Depression in Bristol tends to arrive alongside effort. This is a city where people build things, whether bands, businesses, side projects or careers, and there is a quiet expectation that you are doing something interesting with yourself. When the interest drains away, the silence it leaves is loud. Recorded depression on GP registers stood at 15.6% of patients aged 18+ in 2024/25, above the England average of 14.3%, which is around one adult in six. That takes in Clifton and Knowle alike, though what presses on people differs sharply between them. Rising rents, long hours and a city that never quite stops moving wear people down slowly rather than dramatically, and it can take a year to notice it has happened.

Depression counselling here is steady and structured: we focus on the low mood, lost motivation and disconnection affecting you now, and on rebuilding the energy, routine and self-worth that hold a day together.
The method travels; only the geography changes. the main depression counselling page explains it properly, session lengths and fees answers the practical questions, and my credentials and registration shows how the practice is held to account.
Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.
Everything runs online, by secure video. There is no room in this city; Bradley works from Hove. With low mood that fits the problem, because the hardest part of an appointment is the getting there and this one has no getting there. You can join from a flat in Fishponds or a shared house in Montpelier without crossing town at all. In the weeks when washing and dressing feel like projects, keeping an appointment that requires neither is a small, real win.

Depression Counselling in Bristol
Depression work is steady and structured, and it moves at the speed of small things. We start with the plain record of a week rather than a description of how you feel, because feelings are slippery and facts are not: when you woke, whether you ate, who you spoke to, what you used to do on a Saturday and no longer do. Then we rebuild one increment at a time, since motivation follows activity rather than preceding it. We also look plainly at the parts of your life that are simply heavy. Rent that swallows most of a wage, unreliable freelance income and a long commute are circumstances, and calling them thinking errors would be dishonest. VitaMinds, the BNSSG NHS Talking Therapies service, is the self-referral route locally, and your GP matters where sleep, appetite or safety have gone badly wrong. Bristol Mind runs support in the city if isolation is a large part of it.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.

Private sessions with me usually mean you can start sooner and stay with the same counsellor throughout; I am glad to work alongside any NHS or GP support you already have.

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.
Bristol questions
Only in making your experience unexceptional. The figure covers patients aged 18+ on GP registers in 2024/25, against 14.3% nationally. It cannot predict how long yours will last or how it will respond to anything. What it does mean is that nobody here should treat you as a curiosity for saying it.
That is a sensible order and plenty of people follow it. VitaMinds, the BNSSG NHS Talking Therapies service, takes self-referrals in England without a GP letter and costs nothing. For some that is enough. Others prefer one consistent person to a fixed course, or want something running while a wait passes.
Sessions are £80 an hour, £100 for ninety minutes and £120 for two hours, usually weekly to begin with. With depression, regularity achieves more than length, so the hour is generally right. The first 15-minute consultation costs nothing and is a fair place to ask whether this suits you at all.
It can be. Functioning and feeling are not the same thing, and it is entirely possible to meet every deadline while finding no colour in any of it. That version is often harder to admit precisely because the evidence looks fine from outside. We would work with what your week actually costs you.
We start smaller than an explanation. One message, one short walk, one thing that does not require you to account for the last six months. Withdrawal builds its own justification the longer it runs, so the aim is a small reversal you can genuinely manage, then another after it.
Very much so. Feeling flat in a city that prizes energy and independence is more common than it looks, and it is exactly the kind of thing we can talk through. Sessions are held online by secure video; the room is in Hove.
Depression counselling for Bristol runs online wherever you are in the city, so low energy never means a journey across town. Following a free 15-minute consultation, we can usually start secure video sessions within a week or so. The room itself is in Hove, and Bristol is served online.
For depression, VitaMinds, the Bristol NHS Talking Therapies service, is free via self-referral, though waits are common. Working privately with me costs £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for 120 minutes, after a free 15-minute call. You are welcome to use both.
When depression saps motivation, the online option matters: no bus, no parking near Gloucester Road, just a quiet room at home. We meet by secure video, with some evening times for Bristol workers. In-person appointments suit only those who can travel to the Sussex coast.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
