In and around Southend-on-Sea
Life in Southend-on-Sea
A resort town has two seasons and two personalities. Through the summer the seafront and Southend Pier carry the tourism economy, the bars are full and heavy drinking or a weekend of pills reads as part of the fun. Then October arrives, the crowds go, the seasonal hours stop, and whatever grew over the summer is still there in an empty flat in Westcliff. The alcohol-specific death rate here was 17.6 per 100,000 in 2024, above the England average of 13.8 per 100,000. Add a long commute for those who work in the city, and you have a place where compulsion finds a great deal of unattended time.

Addiction counselling here treats the pain beneath the habit, not just the symptom, alcohol, drugs, gambling, food or behavioural, so recovery is something you grow into rather than force.
Because the work itself is the same wherever you live, the detail sits in one place rather than all of them: the addiction counselling page sets out the methods, how I work covers the practicalities, and qualifications, registration and ethics covers accountability.
Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.
Bradley is in Hove, another south coast town, but there is no room here and everything runs by video. In a place where the summer job, the commute and the off-season all pull in different directions, a session that travels with you is far more practical than a fixed appointment. You can take the hour from a flat in Chalkwell, a break at London Southend Airport, or a quiet corner between shifts, without losing a further hour to getting there.

Addiction Counselling in Southend-on-Sea
In a town shaped like this one, addiction reaches well beyond substances. Gambling in particular runs deep in a seaside economy built partly on machines and arcades, and compulsive spending, gaming and pornography behave in the same way. All of them offer a dependable change of feeling, repeated until the thing itself becomes the organising principle of a week. Seasonal work sharpens it: an intense, cash-rich summer followed by months with too little to do is close to a perfect design for a habit taking hold. Sessions start with what the compulsion is carrying rather than with a demand to give it up. Livewell Southend's drug and alcohol advice is the free route into local treatment, delivered by STARS, the Southend treatment and recovery service run by Forward Trust, and SECE Mind provides broader mental health support.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.
Book a free 15-minute callMy online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Southend-on-Sea, free local drug and alcohol support is available through Livewell Southend's drug and alcohol advice.
For confidential information and advice, FRANK (on 0300 123 6600) and Drinkline on 0300 123 1110 are free, and Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART Recovery run peer-support meetings you can find online.
Other local and national support verified for this area includes:
This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.
If you drink heavily or use drugs daily, do not stop suddenly on your own. Withdrawal can cause seizures and can be dangerous. Speak to your GP or a local drug and alcohol service first, and they can arrange a safe, medically supported withdrawal. Counselling works alongside that, not instead of it.
Southend-on-Sea questions
Very quickly. There is no waiting list, a free 15-minute call is normally available within days, and a first full session follows within a week or two. No referral or GP letter is needed, so nothing depends on catching a service at the right moment.
£80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 minutes and £120 for 120 minutes, paid as you go after a free 15-minute call. Seasonal income makes some months harder than others, and moving between weekly and fortnightly sessions to match that is entirely acceptable.
That is the free local route, leading to STARS for assessment, prescribing and structured groups. Counselling is a private weekly hour with one counsellor, working on the reasons underneath the habit. The two do different jobs and are frequently used together.
It counts fully. Machines and apps are engineered to remove every natural stopping point, which is why gambling takes such a firm hold in a town like this. It is treated with the same seriousness here as alcohol or cocaine, because it works the same way.
It is one of the most recognisable patterns on this coast. Work thins out, the town empties, the days get short, and a habit expands into hours that suddenly have nothing in them. Naming that seasonal shape usually makes the problem far more workable.
Yes. Online sessions from Hove are not tied to a fixed clinic slot, so we can shape a rhythm that works whether you are flat out in summer or facing a quieter winter. You join from home, and we adjust timing as your week changes.
Usually within a week. I work from Hove by video and phone with people across Southend and south-east Essex, with no local waiting list. We start with a free 15-minute consultation, then set a first session that fits around the seasons, the commute or family.
I charge £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for 120, with a free 15-minute consultation first. NHS addiction services in Southend are free but can involve a wait, whereas private online sessions with me start quickly and are not tied to a fixed clinic slot.
I work online only, by video or phone from Hove, not from a room on the seafront. Evening times are available, and there is no travel and no waiting room. From Leigh-on-Sea to Shoeburyness or Westcliff, you take part from a private space at home.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
