Life in Merthyr Tydfil

Why people in Merthyr Tydfil reach out

Merthyr Tydfil, once the iron capital of the world, sits at the head of the south Wales valleys and has carried the heavy aftermath of industrial collapse for generations. Some of the deepest deprivation in Wales, insecure work and valley isolation all shape what people here carry.

Merthyr Tydfil stands at the head of the Taff valley, where the Brecon Beacons meet the old south Wales coalfield. In the nineteenth century it was the largest town in Wales and, through the Cyfarthfa and Dowlais ironworks, effectively the iron capital of the world, its furnaces feeding railways and empires. Cyfarthfa Castle, built by the ironmaster Crawshay family, now houses the town's museum above the ruins of the works. It was here in 1804 that Richard Trevithick ran the first steam locomotive, and here that the Merthyr Rising of 1831 became a landmark in Welsh working history. Districts such as Dowlais, Penydarren and Georgetown climb the valley sides, with the Beacons and the Taff Trail beginning almost at the town's edge.

In tightly-held valley communities a long way from specialist help, a secure video link closes the distance and keeps the work private.

Merthyr Tydfil sits at the head of the south Wales valleys and is served by Prince Charles Hospital under Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, with the restored Cyfarthfa Castle a landmark of its iron-making heritage.

The substance use counselling itself

Substance use counselling here is non-judgemental and one-to-one, working with the pain, fear or loneliness the substance has been managing, at a pace that protects your sense of safety.

The approach is the same wherever you live, so rather than repeat it on every page you can read it in full, the methods, what each session covers and fees, on the main substance use counselling page and on how I work.

How online sessions work

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link held to the same strict BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call to check we are a good fit, you join each session from any private space using a phone, tablet or laptop, no software to install, no waiting room and no journey at either end.

At the head of the valley, Merthyr can feel a long way from specialist face-to-face help, and reaching services further down the Taff or in Cardiff takes time and travel. My practice is based in Hove, on the far south coast, so I do not work in the town in person. I do offer confidential counselling by secure video, which reaches Merthyr and anywhere in Wales, and the UK besides, so where you live never has to stand in the way.

Substance Use Counselling in Merthyr Tydfil

Why people in Merthyr Tydfil come for substance use counselling

Merthyr has known some of the deepest hardship in Wales, and for some people substances have become a way of getting through insecure work, long-standing pain or valley isolation. I do not judge how things reached this point. My work looks at what the substance has been doing for you, and at how to find steadier ground that does not depend on it. As a Hove-based counsellor I work with people across Merthyr by secure video rather than in person, so honest support reaches you at home, whether you are in Dowlais, Penydarren or Gurnos.

Merthyr Tydfil questions

Online Substance Use Counselling in Merthyr Tydfil: common questions

Can I get online substance use counselling if I live in Merthyr Tydfil?

Yes. I work with people right across Merthyr Tydfil, from the town centre outwards, and anywhere else in Wales, by secure video, no need to travel to Hove, and just as confidential as meeting in the room.

Can I get support while I'm still using?

Yes. This is non-judgemental, one-to-one work that meets you where you are, and it can run alongside any medical or detox support you have.

How is this different from a group or 12-step programme?

It is individual and shaped entirely around you. Some people use it instead of groups, others alongside them.

Will you tell my GP or employer?

No. What you share is confidential within the BACP framework; nothing goes to anyone else without your consent.

Is online counselling really suitable up here?

For most people, yes. You need only a private space and a steady connection. Working by secure video means support reaches you at home in Merthyr, which many find easier and steadier than travelling down the valley or into Cardiff for appointments.

How quickly can I begin substance use counselling in Merthyr Tydfil?

Often the same week. After a free 15-minute consultation to check we fit, we arrange your first session. Because everything is by secure video, being at the head of the Taff valley rather than down towards Cardiff makes no difference to how soon we start.

Is substance use counselling cheaper on the NHS in Merthyr Tydfil?

NHS drug services through Cwm Taf Morgannwg health board are free, and Dan 24/7 gives free all-Wales advice, though demand is high. Privately I charge £80 an hour, £100 for 90 minutes and £120 for two hours, after a free 15-minute consultation.

What is online substance use counselling like for someone in Merthyr Tydfil?

You join by secure video from a private space at home, whether in Troedyrhiw, Twynyrodyn or Treharris, needing only a steady connection. I keep some evening appointments, so the long journey down the valley or into Cardiff for specialist help is no longer needed.

Merthyr feels a long way from anywhere, does that matter for counselling?

Not when the work is done by secure video. Sessions reach you at home at the head of the valley just as easily as anywhere else, so the distance to a city service stops being the deciding factor.

Are you based in Merthyr?

No, my practice is in Hove. I cannot meet anyone in Merthyr Tydfil in person, but I work with people across the valley and the whole of Wales online, by secure video, wherever you are.
