Life in Darlington

What is going on for people in Darlington?

The picture of drug use in Darlington that people carry around is usually wrong. Far more often it is someone in Haughton or Branksome who is at work by seven, competent, liked, and using in the hours nobody sees. Cocaine has spread well beyond nights out here, and prescribed medication has its own quiet trajectory. The town's instinct is to say very little and keep going, which works right up until it does not. What tends to give way first is sleep, money and patience, in that order, and by then the person concerned has usually been managing entirely alone for a long stretch.

What actually happens in substance use counselling?

Substance use counselling here is non-judgemental and one-to-one, working with the pain, fear or loneliness the substance has been managing, at a pace that protects your sense of safety.

What actually happens in the room is the same everywhere, so it is written up once: see the substance use counselling page for the methods, the practical side for fees and session lengths, and professional standards and registration if you want to check who you would be working with.

How do online sessions actually work?

Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Sessions happen by secure video from Hove. For substance-use work in a town this size the distance genuinely helps, since nobody sees which door you walk through and no local staff know your face. We can meet before a shift, late at night, or in the middle of a day off. Turning up having used is not a breach of anything. It is simply part of what we are looking at together.

Substance Use Counselling in Darlington

Why people in Darlington come for substance use counselling

This is drug-focused counselling that starts where you are rather than where a programme would like you to be. Darlington has more people in formal treatment than the country as a whole, with 6.7 adults per 1,000 in treatment at specialist drug-misuse services in 2020/21 against an England average of 4.5 per 1,000, and it also carries a heavy toll, with deaths from drug misuse at 10 per 100,000 across 2022 - 24 compared with 5.8 nationally. I am not the service that prescribes, tests or supplies equipment; STRIDE does that through Darlington Borough Council's STRIDE drug and alcohol service, and Darlington Mind is there for wider mental health support. What happens in our hour is different. We work out what the substance is doing at the exact moment you reach for it, and what would have to exist instead for that moment to be survivable.

Drug, alcohol & addiction support in Darlington

My online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Darlington, free local drug and alcohol support is available through Darlington Borough Council's STRIDE drug and alcohol service.

For confidential information and advice, FRANK (on 0300 123 6600) and Drinkline on 0300 123 1110 are free, and Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART Recovery run peer-support meetings you can find online.

Other local and national support verified for this area includes:

If you need urgent help now

This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. The Samaritans are free, day or night, on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258.

If you drink heavily or use drugs daily, do not stop suddenly on your own. Withdrawal can cause seizures and can be dangerous. Speak to your GP or a local drug and alcohol service first, and they can arrange a safe, medically supported withdrawal. Counselling works alongside that, not instead of it.

Darlington questions

Online Substance Use Counselling in Darlington: common questions

Do I have to want to stop before you will see me?

No. Wanting to stop is not a ticket you have to produce at the door. People come here still using every day, using now and then, or newly stopped, and each of those is a real starting point. We work from the truth of it rather than an intention.

Will using before a session mean you end it?

Not on principle. If you are so affected that you cannot follow a conversation, we would rearrange, and I would say so kindly rather than as a punishment. Otherwise we carry on. Honesty about what you have taken is far more useful to me than abstinence.

What are the fees for substance-use counselling?

They are £80 / 60 min, £100 / 90 min and £120 / 120 min. The first 15-minute consultation is free, so you can find out how I work without paying for the privilege. Payment happens per session, and you can stop at any point without explanation.

Can I do this from a shared house in Firthmoor?

Yes. Headphones solve most of it, and where they do not, people use a car, a lunch break or an hour when the house empties. Tell me when you can genuinely speak without being overheard and we will fix the slot around that rather than the other way round.

Is counselling any use while I am already on a script?

It often works best then. A prescription can stabilise the practical side while leaving the reasons untouched, and that gap is where people slip. Working on the reasons while STRIDE handles the medical part gives you two things holding the situation instead of one.

Is this separate from the NHS?

Yes. I'm an independent private counsellor, arranged directly with you, not part of any local NHS or council service. You're welcome to use NHS talking therapies alongside or instead - I'm simply another option, available by video at a time that suits your week.

Is there substance use counselling available in Darlington, and how quickly?

There is no consulting room in Darlington, but I work right across the area by secure video from Hove. Whether you are near Cockerton or Hummersknott, we can arrange a free 15-minute call first and then a weekly time for substance use counselling, often within days of you getting in touch.

Is substance use counselling for Darlington done online or face to face?

I do not offer face-to-face sessions in Darlington; everything is by confidential video call. For substance use, that often helps, as you can speak openly from a private space rather than a waiting room. I keep a few evening slots alongside daytime ones, so working around the Darlington Economic Campus is manageable.
