If you drink heavily or use drugs daily, do not stop suddenly on your own. Withdrawal can cause seizures and can be dangerous. Speak to your GP or a local drug and alcohol service first, and they can arrange a safe, medically supported withdrawal. Counselling works alongside that, not instead of it.

Will you insist I stop using?
No. You decide the goal and it can change as you go. Insisting on abstinence at the first session tends to end the honest conversation before it starts, and honesty is the only thing that makes these sessions worth the money.
Is any of this shared with the university or my employer?
None of it. There is no report to a tutor, a college, an employer or the police, and no NHS record is created. Confidentiality only bends where someone's life is in immediate danger, and you would be part of that discussion wherever possible.

An hour costs £80, ninety minutes costs £100 and a double session costs £120, and the introductory 15-minute call is free. Fortnightly sessions are a reasonable way to make it work on a student income, and you can pause between terms without losing your place.
Would the Essex council drug service be better for me?
It might well be the right first step, and it is free. They handle testing, harm reduction and prescribing. What is missing there is time, so people often use the council service for the practical side and these sessions for the reasons behind the use.
My use only started after I moved here. Does that matter?
It matters a great deal. Use that begins with a move, a posting or a first term is usually doing something specific about isolation or dislocation. Naming that changes the problem from a character flaw into something with an actual cause you can work on.
Can we keep working together if I am deployed or posted away?
Yes. Working online from Hove means our sessions are not tied to one place. Wherever a posting or deployment takes you, as long as you have privacy and a connection, we can continue, which is often exactly when it helps most.
