In and around Cwmbran
Life in Cwmbran
Cwmbran was planned rather than grown, laid out after the war as a new town with its neighbourhoods set apart from one another and the shopping precinct at the middle. It works well in many ways and it can also leave people curiously separate. You can live in St Dials or Coed Eva for years, know the faces at the school gate and still have nobody you would ring at eleven at night. Habits grow well in that kind of gap. An evening that has no shape gets a shape imposed on it: the same drink, the same app, the same hours online. Nobody sees it happen, because a planned town is quiet after dark and everybody's front door is closed.

The local picture
Official figures for Cwmbran, for context rather than as a description of you.
In Torfaen (the council area covering Cwmbran) the age-standardised drug-misuse death rate was 7.0 per 100,000 in 2022 to 2024 (an ONS estimate flagged as low reliability due to small numbers), below the Wales average of 8.5 per 100,000. Addiction counselling here treats the pain beneath the habit, not just the symptom, alcohol, drugs, gambling, food or behavioural, so recovery is something you grow into rather than force.
What actually happens in the room is the same everywhere, so it is written up once: see the main addiction counselling page for the methods, how I work, sessions and fees for fees and session lengths, and qualifications, registration and ethics if you want to check who you would be working with.
Sessions run over a secure, encrypted video link, held to the same BACP confidentiality as meeting in person. After a free fifteen-minute call, you join from any private space on a phone, tablet or laptop.
Nothing about this involves a journey. Bradley sees people from Hove, and Cwmbran counselling runs by secure video, which matters in a town spread as widely as this one. Whether you are out at Henllys, Llanyravon or up by Pontnewydd, the appointment is the same distance away. You pick a weekly time and it stays yours. Nothing is posted to you and nothing arrives that anyone else in the house would need explaining.

Addiction Counselling in Cwmbran
The word addiction puts people off, so start somewhere easier. Is there one thing you go back to more than you mean to, that you have privately decided to cut down at least a dozen times? It may be alcohol or a drug. Just as often now it is betting, gaming, scrolling or spending, none of which leave any physical trace. In a town built around a few large employers, where work can feel precarious and evenings can feel long, a reliable source of relief becomes very valuable very quickly, and then very expensive. Counselling looks at what the relief is for. That is slower than being told to stop and considerably more durable. GDAS, the Gwent drug and alcohol service, takes calls on 0333 999 3577, and the NHS find a service directory sets out what else you can approach.
Not sure if it is right for you? A free fifteen-minute call is a no-obligation way to talk it through.
Book a free 15-minute callMy online counselling sits alongside the help available locally. In Cwmbran, your GP can refer you to local drug and alcohol services, and you can find support through DAN 24/7, the Wales Drug and Alcohol Helpline.
For confidential information and advice, FRANK (on 0300 123 6600) and Drinkline on 0300 123 1110 are free, and Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART Recovery run peer-support meetings you can find online.
Other local and national support verified for this area includes:
This is not a crisis service. If anyone is in immediate danger call 999. For urgent mental health support, call NHS 111 and press 2 for urgent mental health support. The CALL Helpline for Wales is free on 0800 132 737, the Samaritans are on 116 123, and you can text SHOUT to 85258.
If you drink heavily or use drugs daily, do not stop suddenly on your own. Withdrawal can cause seizures and can be dangerous. Speak to your GP or a local drug and alcohol service first, and they can arrange a safe, medically supported withdrawal. Counselling works alongside that, not instead of it.
Cwmbran questions
You have a free 15-minute call with me. It is informal. You describe what has been going on, in whatever words you have for it, and I explain how the work runs. Nobody is assessed, scored or put on a list, and you can leave it there if it is not right.
An hour of counselling is £80. Ninety minutes costs £100, two hours £120, and the free 15-minute consultation comes before any of them. The weekly hour is what nearly everyone settles on, and the price does not change if a session has to move.
GDAS is the Gwent drug and alcohol service and covers Torfaen, with a single point of contact on 0333 999 3577. The NHS find a service directory lists other routes. Mind in Gwent supports mental health locally. Any of them can run alongside counselling with me.
It is. Behavioural habits sit inside this work properly, not as an afterthought. Long nights online in an otherwise ordinary life do real damage to sleep, money and closeness with other people, and they respond well to being looked at rather than hidden.
Not through me. There is no local building to be seen entering, no letter and no note to your GP unless you ask for one. Confidentiality follows the BACP Ethical Framework, and I will go through its few limits with you in the first session.
No. My practice is in Hove, so there is no local consulting room. Sessions are held by secure video, which works just as well from any of the town's neighbourhoods and saves you moving around the grid of estates to get there.
Usually within a week. After a free 15-minute consultation we book your first full session. Whether you are in Croesyceiliog, Fairwater or Llanyravon, everything runs by secure video, so there is no waiting list and no need to travel around the new town or into Newport to begin.
NHS substance misuse support through Aneurin Bevan health board and the free Dan 24/7 helpline costs nothing, though waits vary. My private sessions are £80 for 60 minutes, £100 for 90 and £120 for 120, after a free 15-minute consultation and with no waiting list.
Yes. Rather than crossing the spread-out estates or heading into Newport after work, you meet me by secure video from home, whether in Pontnewydd or Coed Eva. I keep some evening slots, so a working day need not stand in the way of sessions.
A free fifteen-minute call is the simplest place to start, no obligation, just a chance to see if we are the right fit.
Also available online across Wales: Newport, Pontypridd, Cardiff. See all of Wales.
Also available in Cwmbran: substance use counselling, counselling for drinking problems and trauma counselling.
There is more on this in my writing: a cognitive-restructuring exercise for compulsive behaviour and the four-stage cycle of addiction.
If you can reach the south coast, this work is also done face to face in Brighton — all in-person areas are listed here.
